Events   Events : Summary of AmigaOS4 presentation in Bremen
posted by MikeB on 8-Mar-2004 21:16:29 (7759 reads)
At the "Computer&Video-Börse" fair in Bremen, Germany, Hyperion developers Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden presented the latest version of AmigaOS4 and answered relating questions. Read more for an English summary of Thorsten Mampel's contribution to the German Amiga-News.de portal. First pictures from this event are available here.

Edited by DaveP - innaccuracies now italicized

With the current version of AmigaOS4 the pre-release is expected to become available to all AmigaOne owners within the upcoming 14 days. Currently there is still an error with regard to the interaction between USB and IDE. This will soon get fixed.

All desired functionality has already been integrated into AmigaOS4. Currently work is done on merging a PPC native version Picasso96 with the OS, but the 68k version already works. Also Warp3D works and this was proved by demonstrating Frog noise and a demo version of Freespace.

The USB-Stack is implemented and works. Keyboard, Mice and Joysticks should function, but the MassStorage-Class for USB-Sticks and Memory cards is still missing.

The Onboard-Sound for the AmigaOne does not work due to a hardware failure. Currently this means that people would need an additional soundcard. The MicroA1 does not share this problem. Support for the SoundBlaster128 is under development.

Bluetooth and SCSI support are planned for later versions.

The default 68k-Emulator is currently an Interpreter. The JIT-Compiler Petunia already functions but its automatic use is yet to be implemented.

The integration of the Forefront driver system still isn't completed. The test systems used Voodoo3 graphic cards because these are currently more stable than systems equipped with Radeon cards.

GRex support could not be converted because important developer information from its manufacturer is missing (apparently due to lack of interest on their part).

No final release date has been announced. The time needed for pending Beta-tests and problem solving cannot be determined with certainty.

If that is the case, how can the pre-release be shipped within 14 days?

Quite frankly, because both the "integration problem" and the "14 days delivery" are wrong.

With all respect, i do wonder if it will come out one day

Your point being?

My point being that it seems a lot needs to be done before the final release, which is what i am interested in buying (not the prerelease).

The driver had some bugs, one or two of which were showstoppers but the list of Radeon driver bugs I've seen considered as holding back anything have now been fixed. There's still some more stuff to do, but this is a "prerelease", and things will be a lot better for final release, and it's now reasonable for normal use.

will the drivers support tft monitors connected via dvi interface to a radeon 8500?

i have some problems with linux here. it works ok with xfree but does not work at all inside uboot or a linux shell. will this work?

thanks and
byebye...

@MichaelMerkel

The OS4 radeon drivers can't fix a problem with UBoots text output, since that happens before the drivers are even loaded from disk! But, once OS4 is booted, you never return to the UBoot style text display, so that shouldn't be a problem.

i see.
if i understand the current problem with uboot correctly it is sort of an initialization problem. means, the dvi port is not properly activated or a wrong screenmoe used or smth like that.
i just wanted to know if the os4 radeon drivers will initialize the port in a correct way so it can be used? has this been tested yet?
as more and more tft displays are in use these days this gets more important imho.

thanks and

I think we have gone through that before, haven't we? There is no "initialization problem" in U-Boot. The same bios that runs on the PC runs in U-Boot. Normally, it should activate both output ports in clone mode. I don't have any idea why it doesn't do that.

My points being:
- You base your bashing on an inaccurate report
- We've already admitted that it is late in coming; that is the reason why I don't do any more release date announcements.
- You do not 'buy' the prerelease.
[edit]
Oh, and I forgot: Even if there where much to do, what is your point for wondering if it will come out at all?
[/edit]

I never was 'bashing', just making an observation. I've always had and still have a lot of respect for what you and the OS4 team are doing. And at that time, i didn't even know that the report was inaccurate, otherwise i wouldn't have made any comment at all. I was wondering about the 'radeon driver not fully working yet' bit. That's all.

I never claimed that because i fully know that the prerelease is free. I do read the news. I was just saying that i'm waiting for the final release.

Stranger things have happened in the Amiga community. I've learned, from the past, that any product is not out/finished/real until it is in the shops.

OK, I should have said "you based your comment"... That is exactly the problem I have with such inaccuracies in such reports, the radeon driver issue is not an issue at all (same about that two weeks deliver stuff). Next thing you do is try to get things corrected on every web page.

Your original quote said "... which is what i am interested in buying (not the prerelease).", so I assumed you where saying that you think that the prerelease has to be bought.

Of course things might go bust, but that is the only thing that will keep us from finishing OS 4. Other than that it will come out.

Well, to be honest, that is the only part that i fear. If somebody would say to me: "it's 100% sure that OS4 will be released but it will take another year", i wouldn't mind waiting. It is not as if my life depends on it. I'm convinced that OS4 will be cool and worth the wait.

But for a company like Hyperion, which is a small company, the financial situation can't be really confortable, especially with 2 key programmers working on OS4. And there doesn't seem to be any backing financially from a bigger company (surely not from Amiga Inc).

I may be overly negative here but i've been dissapointed too many times by being too overly positive

Anyway, you are right. There is no point in being frustrated/anxious/... We can only wait and hope for the best

yes we have
but as it is unfortunately still not working i'm not so happy with it currently.

hmmm... if the same card with the same bios is initializing the dvi port on a pc correctly and is not working in the amiga one u-boot screen but within linux, well, as a developer i would believe in a u-boot problem first. of course i may be wrong but as you told you don't have a radeon 8500 + dvi + tft combination and can not check it - how can you be so sure about it?

i really don't have the intention to go on your nerves. sorry if this sounds like doing so.
for me this is just a bug somewhere which needs to be fixed. you're the developer which has the knowledge - not me. just ignoring that such a problem exists (and it does) is not the final solution.
of course - prerelase first. such problems can be fixed even in a boing bag later.

Well, I can assure you that this is the only way that OS 4 can be prevented - Hyperion going bust. I don't see that happening all too soon, though.

Because I am initializting the card by the book. There is no way I can possibly imagine that the card initializes all right on VGA but fails on TFT.

Did you at least try what I proposed earlier (reflashing the bios with a different setting selected)?

Like I said, I wouldn't even know where to start. I wouldn't think there is a problem to being with - it does initialize the display all right, it just has the "wrong" port.

yes i did. i reflashed my radeon about 4 times with not making it better.
i also tried that u-boot env var for setting the u-boot screenmode.

well, i believe the prerelease has highest priority now. sooner or later this will have to be investigated further. but that can be done later.

just yesterday i got an email from someone who also had a problem with a radeon at the dvi port. he now has a nvidea card which does work without problems. just for your information. it really seems to be a very special radeon initialization problem or a bug inside the radeon firmware. the very latest i found and have installed now is some years old.

thanks for your patience - and now don't bother with me but please make the prerelease usable for us
