Also, can we use the kickstart files that came with the AmigaOne Debian CD?

Pirates, heh. Silly little game. Syndicate - now THAT is a man's game

BTW, is it using JIT yet?

No. But then you'll mostly want UAE for running old, hardware-bashing games. In that case, you don't need the JIT. Software that is system-friendly is better off run under OS4's 68k emulation.

Rich

This is great.

What it needs in addition:

1) Run on its own screen, fullscreen (content scaled)
a) How about rendering to a texture the size of the screen, and letting the 3D hardware on the graphics card handle the 3D scaling without any CPU hit?

2) Eradicate the funny border sizes

3) Full A1200 speed emulation to run A1200 AGA games

Productivity software will be better off running under the OS4 68k emulation, but for hardware hitting games, having a seamless integration of UAE into the OS in this way would be cool. Click on the .adf, and the game comes up automatically, full screen, like a real Amiga! Multidisk games? Ensure that they are named Filename_X.adf, where X is the disk number, and then the emulator can auto-swap disks without human intervention.

Have a uae.prefs application to set "Compatibility Emulation Settings"

Yeah, this is all that is required for decent compatibility with old Amiga games. With resources like the legal Amiga games site (The one that gets permission to publish the .adf files for the old Amiga games) this will be sweet.

Can old games be started directly without launching them by using UAE & old AOS?

Amiga version of UAE also needs to be able to read the setup from the icon of the game/adf that is being tried to run.
(so that one does not need first to setup UAE via trial & error before one can play)

btw. is it possible for AOS4 to detect and alert when application tries to access OCS/ECS/AGA?

If so, then AOS could suggest " ignore / kill / generate launch icon for for that app & UAE and restart the app by using UAE" .

Is there action replay for UAE?

extremely good news but I am just wondering if this does not duplicate work instead of focus because petunia should do the same as uae but maybe I am wrong and petunia is anyway not integrated in OS4. So now we may have 2 programms to make the same thing.

Petunia is accellerated 68k emulation integrated into the OS. I.e., 68k applications run automatically under the PowerPC AmigaOS, they can use PPC libaries (I believe that PowerPC applications can also use 68k libraries) without knowing that, etc.

UAE is emulated everything Amiga - chipset, processor, etc.

The former is for OS friendly applications. The latter is for hardware hitting games (and applications, but you'd need an OS3.9 install on a hardfile or something, could be messy).

This is already in there, AFAIK

That shouldn't be a problem on the A1...

DefIcons can help you there... if you have a def_adf.info, and set the tooltype to UAE...

Impossible. UAE can't detect that the game wants a different disk, let alone which disk, without specific code in it for thousands of games... which is crazy.

Yeah, I realised this after posting! Silly me!

Still, for a game with 4 disks or less, and where the game understands multiple drives, it should be possible to set the tooltypes for the first disk icon to say "DF1=disk2.adf", etc. Heh.

@Hattig

No point in using the ADF's themselves as starting points for UAE.

Better to doubelclick on an UAE configuration file and start UAE with it as an argument. No need for anything special.

That isn't very transparent to the user. It is two steps, one of which may not be obvious.

As a user, I'd want to click on the ADF. Therefore the ADF icon tooltypes should contain the required configuration settings to run the game.

Great news indeed. ;)

I wrote a gui for windows ages ago, that indexed a folder with adf-files, and built generic-a500 configurations for each of the games. When it indexed, it scanned the files, it looked if there was a - in the name, then building automatically 3 disks for the script. Like indy-1.adf , indy-2.adf indy-3.adf, and inserted them as additional floppies.

Then in my gui, i could just select a game, and run, with no configuration whatsoever. ;)

Hopefully something similar could be made to Os4, when available.

Cool!!!

I'll finally be able to try out Castlevania for the Amiga.

I hope it's better integrated than WinUAE on Windows.

@niceguy1979

Yeah OS4 is backward compatible. You can run old systemfriendly Amiga software/games. But if you want to play old AGA-games etc then you need UAE, because OS4 does not emulate Amiga custom chipset.

Great job.

In the further future, it would be great to have it integrated, like the Mac Classic environment in OS X.

My hypothetical ideas for how this could be done are:

- Use address space emulation to emulate e.g. AGA chipset
- Use Petunia as JIT instead of UAE's own engine?
- DefIcons and configuration database for ADF files

Any others?
