oh crap. Looks like me and the rest of the "May boys" really are sunk.
Confirmed over and over again. The "too earlybirds" got wormed.

Is the new installation guide different from the one which is inside
the pre-release cd??
Anything we should pay attention to?? or we can just use the
guide of the cdrom??

Yes it is slightly.

The only difference is FFS Blocksize.

Covers changing FFS Partitions to Blocksize 2048.
However, for SFS Partitions use a Blocksize of 512.

"There are two versions available. One is for updating from U-Boot version 0.0.1 (September 10th, 2003), the other is for updating from version 1.0.0 (December 2003 or later)."

Hm, I am confused, must have missed something here - does this mean I have to flash my May 2003 U-Boot to this September/December version first before I can update it to the needed version?

Can I update straight from May 2003 U-Boot -> latest using the updater provided on pre-release CD?

If answer to first question is yes, are the images still available for download somewhere or maybe even included within pre-release CD?

Seppo

@GrumpyOldMan

There are two "updaters", one for "pre 1.0 Uboot", one for "post 1.0 Uboot".
Which version is yours ? It's probably a 0.0.x version. Then use the "pre 1.0" Uboot updater and it's done...

bye

You guess wrong. You must not have access to the CAM or you would already know this.

The only question is whether the TFTPServer author will allow us to distribute it or not as it is currently a beta tester thing. I don't know if it is included on the final CD or not but it should be IMHO.

Could somebody (Hyperion?) set up a public TFTP server with the two updates on it? That would solve all the hassle of creating U-Boot update CDs, at least for us folks on Ethernet/Broadband.

At this point, I would like to remember everyone that the update can be done with a floppy disk. It's an alternative that seems to be forgotten by many.
I did all my updates like this and it works flawlesly...
(I know not all people have a floppy drive, but I know as well that such drive can be found at approximately no cost)

As is good old serial (115200) via Kermit. The 'loadb' command can be used to xfer over your uboot image as I've done many times in the past.

There's typo in "Section 1. Updating your Firmware"

uboot command to start the update of the usboot shoud be:

CDROM as Secondary Slave Type: diskboot 500000 3:0 ; bootm

Sorry. I tend to write a bit incoherantly after 3:00 AM (And many would argue before that time as well.) Translated into something akin to human speech: Those of us who have the MAY U-Boot revision are going to have to wait for a new ROM installation before we can use OS4. Many thought that the u-boot update for the September revision would work for all earlier revisions. The new rewording of the install instructions pretty much rules this out. Time to notify the people I bought my AOne from......

@Marky

You can get the Sept U-Boot updater from the files area on the a1-linux ml, however if you have the May or earlier version at the moment, it is quite likely that you have a protected ROM. It is far better to find that out now, than when you have OS4 in your hands (in fact, it would have been far better to find out a couple of months ago), as your dealer will need to unprotect your ROM.

Quite right, the main reason for me finding out how to set up a TFTP server was because I did not know how to, and I don't like not knowing how to do something I accepted the challenge of finding out what to do, and within 10 mins thanks to Google I had the server set up and ready to go.

There is no NEED for anyone else to do it this way, I just felt like saving a blank CD or floppy (I have updated UBOOT before by CD, but I thought I'd like to try something different

Spaced was an excellent series. Did you see Shawn of the Dead? It was like an episode of Spaced, but longer

I just successfully updaded my May 2003 U-Boot to September version from floppy image I downloaded from A1 Linux Yahoo group file section. So not all May U-Boot ROMs are write protected. You should of course contact your A1 dealer and check things out. At least my dealer was able to confirm that the ROM in my machine is not write-protected.

Cheers,

Seppo

Same here, mine was not write-protected (G4XE from April -03), shipped with the April -03 Uboot, I've upgraded a few times since

I also got a confirmation from my dealer, that it wasn't write-protected, when I asked before the first re-flash
