Why won't anyone post any screenshots of PageStream 5 for OS4?

Are you guys who are getting the GR to come up sending crashlogs to Deron? It might help him track down the bugs quicker.

@Chris_Y

I'm getting a softlogik.font glyph error on startup, but I can't find the font in order to resave it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go into the SoftLogic directory & remove or re-name the CSets directory. I have v4 on my micro & I tracked it down to the WinCP#? character sets.

I've just downloaded and installed the OS4 PPC version of PageStream 4, and I can't get it to do anything at all. When starting, it throws up two error requesters in a row saying Bad ELF filehandle, then continues loading. When it is up, the buttons are gone, but you can still load files. However, they don't display at all. Also, it can't close its windows, so if I try to click them closed, the system slows to a crawl and after a minute or so it opens another copy of the window, instead of closing the old one.

It also appears not to see its preferences file, because I manually edited it to change make PageStream open on a public screen, and it continued to open on workbench. (I copied the line from my old 68k PgS prefs file.)

The installation instructions are just to unarchive to a clean directory and run the executable, but my user-startup has assigns for pagestream directories left over from my 68k installation. I thought that might be the problem, so I commented them out, but the behavior does not change.

Others seem to be having more success than I am with this. What am I doing wrong?

V4 68k in OS4 is mostly stable. There is some problematic function,
but it is very productive overall.

The Grim Reapers are mostly just warnings, because you can continue
the work after "ignore errors".

V4 68k works very well! Never got a Grimreaper! I even did a 96 pages cooking booklet on my A1 with my class!

I meant the new V4.1.7.6 Pro for AOS 4 PPC!!!!
This one seems to be as instable as V5 PPC!

you really don't want to see it in its current state - believe me!
if the mui glitches are fixed - and even better a native reaction gui is done one day - then you will get screenshots

(i'd really recomend NOT to make shots with this version!)

byebye...

So V4 68k is OK. If one buys OS4 version now, does one get access to that stable program?

@Thematic

Yes, there's a link on the v4 PPC page to allow you to download it.

You can get to this even if you purchased v5 PPC. Not sure about the pro version though.

Chris

@MichaelMerkel

I totally agree. It's not worth showing any screens from PS5 at the moment. I can't get it to run on my Micro A1 or A!-XE. I can't say it's extremely buggy because it locks up almost immediately. It would perhaps have been better to wait a few more months before releasing a 'beta' version. I paid for the new version and I would have waited a little longer.

well, i can load some documents. i did not try printing yet as the gui sometimes only lets you guess what you're actually doing. but it starts.
all in all it is a first beta. nothing more.

Thanks for spreading the news, Welshguy. I don't get "out" as often as I should!

I noticed a couple unanswered questions which I hope folks don't mind I try and answer.

--------
Quote:
Chris_Y: I'm getting a softlogik.font glyph error on startup, but I can't find the font in order to resave it.

The new release of PageStream does not require the old softlogik.font (though it will use it and will eventually be included if needed), and in fact I don't think it is even in the current archive. If it was, it would not be used by the system unless you copied it to your fonts folder or added the path to the fonts: assign. Most likely you have an older 68k version of PageStream installed somewhere else and that softlogik font is giving you this error. If you run the old version of PageStream you should get the same error.

Quote:
pods: Whats it's interoperability like? I'd assume it would support MS Document types. What versions? How well are they supported?

Not much in this regards as changed from the 4.1 version. "MS Document types" is a rather broad and ambiguous term. PageStream can load MSWord documents (as formatted text), RTF text, and BMP bitmaps. Of course, PageStream can import a great many other formats (PDF documents!, HTML, PNG, TIFF, JPG, GIF, MacPaint, plus many Amiga formats like IFF ILBM-DR2D-FTXT, ProWrite, ProDraw, ProPage, WordWorth, Excellence, ....) 32 formats and growing.

Quote:
mbilla: But then nothing is possible because most icons aren't visible

Fixed for the next release, along with a number of other bugs of course. I hope to put a new version up at the end of this week. I hope someone will post a note here when that happens in case I forget.

sundown: Go into the SoftLogic directory & remove or re-name the CSets directory. I have v4 on my micro & I tracked it down to the WinCP#? character sets.

These are two unrelated issues. The WinCP1256.txt file should not be causing problems, and is part of my test installation, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Each version allows you to download its 68k equivalent, plus all earlier releases. So if you purchase PageStream 5.0 for OS4, you can also download 5.0 for OS3/68K, 4.1 for OS4 or OS3. If you purchase PageStream5.0 Pro for OS4, you get access to that, everything that I mention above, plus 4.1 Pro etc.

Enjoy!

@Deron - thanks for responding to the news item and calrifying those points!

Feel free to submit as news or a forum post (your choice, or both) when the updated next beta is available for download...News tends to scroll out of sight as it's not 'bumped' when a lot of news items hit..
