Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : ACK Amigaworld.net IRC transcripts (10/06/06)
   posted by _Steve_ on 11-Jun-2006 0:27:47 (8382 reads)
Following the recently cancelled hardware demonstration by ACK, a brief IRC session was held in it's place.

An unformatted log of the chat has already been posted by wegster in the forums, however, thanks to pixie, we now have a nicely formatted transcript of the entire session.

Please post your comments in the thread on the forum.

@AmiDog

Ah, I didn't know about the PCMCIA SCSI adaptors. I knew about the ones on accelerators, but you can't plug in a PV and another accel at the same time, so that's why I was wondering.

Do they still sell external IDE or SCSI CD-ROM drives? the only ones I've seen for a while are either USB or firewire. Then again, if the PV has USB plugs and both UBoot and the version of OS4 on the install CD support USB CD drives, then there's no problem.

@CodeSmith

Yeah I think USB would be the best solution, amigaKit sell USB CD-ROM drives for 26.99 so they r relatively cheap. Wonder does the Powervixen LT have USB and what about ethernet for the internet?

@CodeSmith who said Quote:
Hmmm, I just had a thought ... will OS4 come on floppies?

OMFG, are you serious? (seems you are from a later post - my mind boggles)

Who in their right mind uses floppy disks today? Certainly no-one who sells non-trivial software! A floppy disk is so small it has difficulty holding one MP3 or a few JPG pictures. The cost per MB must be enormous. Plus they are incredibly slow, and not very reliable (by comparison to just about anything).

Anyone without a CD-ROM drive (hey a DVD-R/RW is standard now) is stuck at least 10 years in the past, and can't seriously expect to keep up with the modern world. I suppose that the only mitigating factor is that a non-towered A1200 is incredibly unexpandable, but then again I would (and did) get a SCSI Squirrel & CD-ROM drive years ago. Or use an internal IDE CD-ROM drive externally (messy, but you can't expect much with an unmodified A1200).

Rant over - try not to take it too personally, I just get really annoyed at stuff like that (e.g. people still writing games for AGA - they aren't helping the Amiga at all).

It's Wednesday evening here in Auckland. in about an hour and a quarter
I leave for our club meeting where I hoped to have something to show.
It is less than 40 minutes to the end of Tuesday where Adam is
according to a thing I wrote ten years ago and have
never checked daylight saving times since. Will he make it?
If he does will I get them down in time or will all the thousand
or so people wanting to take a look keep me waiting another half day?
I'll spend another hour being an optimist.

Of course the buddha Gautama taught that attachment is the
source of all pain so detach you guys!

Noel

The news about a cheap version of the PowerVixxen TL High-End PPC Amiga-system with 1Ghz version of the 7448 CPU, could be a very cheap and good start, slowly upgrading to 1.7Ghz. It's very good to know that ACK wants people to be able to buy this hardware, because of the brand new Amiga-technology...

I would very well start off with a 1Ghz PowerVixxen TL as a start, saving a lot of money in the beginning I also understand that later in 2007, there will be an updated version to PowerVixxen TL using either TSI-110/111-chip?

Very good news

@ChrisH

No offense taken

The reason I was asking, is that I frankensteined the hell out of my C64 way back when, regretted it years later and decided not to do the same to my A1200 (the only non-trapdoor changes I've made to it are installing an HD floppy drive and replacing the keyboard). Since the standard software distribution method for A1200s is floppy disks (I'd forgotten about the PCMCIA slot when I made my first post), that's why I asked.

Edit: If the PV comes with USB ports that one can boot from, I will definitely "get with the times" and buy an external USB CDRW for use with the A1200...
