Hardware News   Hardware News : Pianeta Amiga - Sam440 specifications
posted by mordock on 23-Sep-2006 12:39:51 (13016 reads)
Empoli 23rd september 2006 - We are sorry about the lack of informations coming from the show but we have some Internet access problems (hopefully solved now).
Here follows the official specifications list of Sam 440 EP motherboard:

Sam440EP® is a motherboard developed on the 440EP (SoC) cpu by AMCC, mini-itx format featuring a hight integration rate, low power consumption, highly expandable and maxim customization possibility during production.

The cpu operates at a 667Mhz frequency, but in “low power” environments it’s possible to choose for a production also in 533Mhz and 400Mhz versions.
Suitable for high performance applications, like image management and manipulation, networking and industrial machine control.

440EP offers a high performance FPU (5 stage pipeline), with single and double precision support, single-cycle execution for many instructions, assuring exceptional performances in math intensive applications (2.0 MFLOPS/Mhz SP/DP).

Integrated onchip are two ethernet 10/100 controllers, one USB 1.1 controller (host), one serial port (full 8 pin) controller for the memory and onePCI controller (66Mhz, 32 bit, V2.2).

The motherboard will be shipped with 256 or 512 Mb ram DDR266 onboard, with option to expand it trough a SODIMM 100 pin slot (max 1Gb ram).

The presence of an ATI Radeon Mobility M9 integrated graphic chip, with 64Mb ram DDR onchip, assures excellent graphic performances in his market [band].
It permits lots of connections to monitor, tv, lcd screens through DVI, VGA, Svideo and LVDS (optional) connectors.
For low-cost/low-power-consumption systems, it’s possible to opt at production time for an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 with 16Mb ram DDR onchip.

There are 4 Serial ATA ports thanks to a Silicon Image 3114 controller, 4 USB 2.0 ports through a Nec controller, Audio 5.1 AC97 with line-in, line-out, mic, cd/dvd in connectors.

A Pci-to-PCI bridge permits to manage best PCI bus traffic, eliminating bottlenecks between devices operating at 66Mhz (Graphics and SATA) and those operating at 33Mhz (USB, Audio, Slot PCI)

A PCI slot (32bit, 33Mhz, 3.3V) and a mini PCI Type 3 slot (124 pin, 3.3V) permit to use PCI standard expansion boards.

The presence of a LatticeXP FPGA enhances greatly the expansion possibilities and therefore implementation possibilities, thanks also to a 96 pin connector interfacing directly to the FPGA.

As additional expansion possibility the board provides a GPIO (32 pin) connector, a SPI and a I2C connector.

An optional CCTalk connector permits the interfacing to payment systems (coins, rest and banknotes devices) using this communication protocol.

The boards can be used also in disk-less mode, using a Disk On Chip or a SmartMedia memory board.

The board’s low profile (max high 20mm) and the lack of cooling fans allow to host the board in extremely small cases.

The board uses Uboot 1.1.4 as BIOS

The developer conference is on going. We will post more informations later. We remember you the IRC chat on #iksnet channel on AW at 17:30 italian time.

It was stated on some other site that they are currently in negotiations with amiga inc regarding the license. So my guess is that they do not know yet.

Even if the hardware was ready tommorow, dont Hyperion want to spend the next few months finishing off their advanced functionality that didnt make it into Update4?

This is a hell of an interesting piece of hardware. I'm tempted to get one just for running some kind of Unix derivative, and I wouldn't the least mind the option to give OS4 a try. Not in any way being connected to that fishy BBRV affair is also an enormous plus. Two thumbs up for this effort!

You buy it for Linux, you use it for AOS4

(hoping AOS4 *will* eventually run on it )

Question:

Is this pretty board fast enough to run old Amiga programs, AGA ones included?

Thanks

I like that board. Little and cute. About what we have in my day job - but x86 (and not that geeky and I like the possibility to customize it). A pitty it's about 1 or 2 years too late. We could have switched to something like it for our platform. But, hey, maybe I buy one and check how it would perform.

I definitvely like the fpga thingy. And with the geek port on the troika this opens new possibilities for the Amiga "coderrzzz". Who writes the first mp3/mpg/divx en/decoder in HW ? Cool. How fast is the xilinx on mem access ? Could one implement a VMX in fpga ? Does it have mem access to both, DDR and VRAM ?

And one more thing. Are there CD ROMs with SATA out now ? Will always be possible to hook up a USB Burner/Drive, I'd guess.

But cool. Bring it on. Need more space in my office again..:)

@ TheDaddy

Considering the G3 Amiga Ones run at only 600Mhz, I would surely imagine so

There aren't many A1s out there running at 600Mhz.

My A1SE has been reliably running at 733 for nearly 4 years now. The Micros are faster still.

Just a thought: Would it be possible to use the fpga to emulate the custom chips in the classic Amigas, like the minimig does?

OS4 BETTER run on it after they use an Amiga event to hype it - I don't go there and hype the album i'm working on as it's not related to Amiga, so why should someone else do it AGAIN?

@OldAmigan

Only the SE run at 600 MHz. And there weren't many of those.

The XE are all running at 800 MHz or faster.

I am not worried if it's not as fast or faster than the A1s, it looks like it might offer more custom options which is nice...

And running (emulated or not) old Amiga games and programs transparently would be a dream

Interesting. Have you guys obtained the NDA information from money controls and written CCTalk drivers yet?

I wonder if I can talk my bosses into basing their fruit machines on this board in future

Hmmm... thinking about it, if these things were available for £100 or less, including OS4 final with OpenGL, i might even be able to talk my bosses into using it.

So i'll be keeping my eye on this one for sure... i always wanted to work with OS4 for a living :)

Hyperion is not a fan of OSS. But Samantha seems to be a point where it unites BSD/Linux/Amiga (and possibly Solaris or other operating systems), it also seems that everyone is very pleased with it. I always believed that in order Amigans to overcome their HW situation, they should cooperate with other communities. It is happening RIGHT NOW

Buy it with Linux run Linux/BSD/amiga.

Cheers!!!!

@yoodoo2

Could you please pm me with the proper jumper settings for 733mhz? I've got mine clocked at 666, and didn't want to go beyond as I wasn't sure what the correct voltage setting should be.
Also, did you have to install a larger cooling system? Mine came with a small fan glued to the top of the cpu.
Thanks -- Jim

Yeah. I'll do that later tonight when I get chance to take it apart. I'm using the original fan.

From the Q&A:

Quote:
the first batch, which will be in limited quantities, for developers, should retail for around 370-399 euros, plus local taxes

@Tomas
Well, i was talking in the future (when OS4 final an OpenGL are out, and if they run on the Sam), the price might have come down by then. Plus the company would buy them in bulk (although realistically, probably not big enough batches to be as cheap as the FPGA based board we use at the moment; but that board is purely 2D).
