Software News   Software News : Cloanto Releases C64 Forever
posted by DaveyD on 1-Jun-2009 8:01:11 (6566 reads)
June 1st, 2009 - Cloanto, developers of Commodore/Amiga software since the 1980s, and already publishers of Amiga Forever, launched today C64 Forever, a revolutionary preservation, emulation and support package.

C64 Forever embodies an intuitive player interface, backed by a built-in database containing more than 5,000 C64 game entries, and advanced support for the new RP2 format, dubbed the "MP3 of retrogaming".

When the C64 was launched in 1982 it immediately set the standard for 8-bit home computers. Its low cost, superior graphics, high quality sound and a massive 64 KB of RAM positioned it as the winner in the home computer wars, knocking out competitors from the likes of Atari, Texas Instruments, Sinclair, Apple and IBM.

Selling over 30 million units and introducing a whole generation to computers and programming, the C64 shook up the video games industry and sparked cultural phenomena such as computer music and the demoscene. In recent years the C64 has enjoyed a spectacular revival manifesting itself once again as a retrocomputing platform.

C64 Forever expands Cloanto's RetroPlatform family, aiming to set new standard in ease of use, emulation power and access to contents. The RetroPlatform player technology, the frequently-updated RetroPlatform Library database and content recognition engine, and the RP2 file format act in synergy to provide a superior user experience. The software includes more than 100 games, some of the finest demoscene productions, and other bits and pieces of history. Adding content is as easy as a drag-and-drop. The RP2 Manager feature further makes it possible to import thousands of games at once from existing C64 CDs, DVDs or internet downloads, while the built-in search functionality makes it easy to find more games on C64 preservation sites.

C64 Forever is available now in two editions:

- Downloadable Plus Edition - $19.95

- Boxed Plus Edition - $24.95 (includes instant download)

I've never used a C64 other than via emulation - I was an Amstrad CPC and Spectrum man back in the 80s. If this is anything like the quality of Amiga Forever though, then it will be great. (I liked Amiga Forever so much that I installed it on my real A1200!)

I don't have a Windows box to run it on, otherwise I'd buy a copy.

I've got nothing against cloanto. (also I own a older version of AmigaForever)
And perhaps they even pay for advertising their windows SW on Amiga sites, I do not know.

But It would be very nice to see Amiga supported as well.
(I do not plan to buy a WindowsOS ever again, I wish developers would at least test their windows apps on Wine, instead of supporting only M$.)

So, C64 forever does not work on Amigas in any way.
But does modern AmigaForever have a installer script also for AOS4 & EUA?

Not that I'm aware of, but it's possible to just drag the System and Work directories off of the CD and use them with UAE manually.

It contains the retroplatform player and new rp2 file format.

What is retroplatform player and what I benefit from rp2 file format? What is rp2 file format in the first place?

Nice convenient software for a fair price. I also assume that all the games included are with the author's permission, so you know where you stand. A lot of Amiga users came from a C64 background (although I came from an Amstrad CPC background) and thus this is of interest of them. In addition retro computer platforms should hang together (but now I'll get the wails saying that Amiga isn't a retro computer platform... you can't win).

Speaking of which, the Amstrad CPC has had many new game releases this year, which is nice.

I have AmigaForever installed on my Windows NT machine. I have also done a manual install of it on my MAC OS X machine. I purchased and downloaded C64Forever and installed it on my Windows NT machine. What are the chances that I could burn the C64Forever ISO file to a CD and then manually install it on my MAC OS X machine?

Thanks.
Ned

Despite owning dozens of real C64s I have yesterday purchased C64 Forever !

Polished emulators are nice way of using older or alternate systems programs when it is not convenient to set up that hardware. And emultors like Amiga Forever help keep interest alive !

Am buying upgrade to Amiga Forever now;my previous Cloanto purchase was AF2006!

In case anyone doesn't know,JiffyDos for the old C64/C128 hardware is still available(eBay and probably elsewhere)JiffyDos was a great improvement to stock C64 .

If only 1% of former C64 users buy C64 Forever it will be a huge success!

Been playing Load Runner like mad. Totally worth the twenty bucks, well put together emulation. I personally would much rather have this tidey package then setting up the emulation myself and maintaining it.
