Hardware News   Hardware News : Sam460ex available with AmigaOS 4.1
   posted by elwood on 27-Jan-2011 23:00:06 (25488 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, Italy - 27 Jan, 2011

ACube Systems Srl is pleased to announce the immediate release of Hyperion's AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 for Sam460ex. Boards and installation CDs are now shipping to resellers.

The board is running at 1.15 Ghz and allows all Amigans to use modern graphic cards thanks to its PCI express slot.
Other features include: 7 USB ports and Gigabit ethernet.

The board is available at a suggested price of 749,00 EUR (including AmigaOS 4.1).
Price excludes local taxes and shipping costs.
Sam460ex AmigaOS 4.1 version:

The version of AmigaOS 4 that will be shipped with the Sam460ex is still to be considered beta. It is made from AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 on which specific components for Sam460ex were added.
You will still have a valid AmigaOS 4 licence that allows you to download the next AmigaOS update when it will be available from Hyperion Entertainment.
Notes about the AmigaOS 4.1 CD currently shipping with Sam460ex

Currently RadeonHD driver supports the following chipsets with full 2D hardware acceleration and DDC:

* R500 (with compositing support) - Radeon X1550, X1650, X1950 and others
* R600 - Radeon HD 2400 - HD 3450 - HD 3650 and others
* R700 - Radeon HD 4350 - HD 4650

The audio driver will be released on OS4depot as soon as it is ready.

The driver for the onboard SATA port is still experimental. It is not loaded by the kicklayout file but you still can use it (at your own risk). It is located in Devs: and you can use it through Mounter.

The final version will be released with an OS update. In the meantime we suggest to use a Silicon Image 3512 PCI card or an USB-SATA combo PCI card with a Silicon Image chip.

Please read the manual for more information on the board.

It was a very long road and we wish to thank everyone for your patience and support.

Wow! Congratulations on getting this out, ACube!

AmigaKit's current Canadian price is not much more than I paid for the Sam440ep board + AmigaOS4 in 2008! (About $86 difference comparing with AmigaKit's confirmation e-mail from my Sam order.)

So its within my historical price range.

True - but with each generation of Sam board the value for the money is improving.

I don't see much of an issue with not being able to transfer AmigaOS 4.x licenses between boards. If you sell the board, the next person will also want AmigaOS 4.x, so you might as well sell it as a complete package. If you don't sell it, then you still need a license for that machine, in which case you wouldn't want to transfer it.

Hmmm. That argument sounds suspiciously like the one Microsoft uses to prevent people from returning OEM copies of Windows. I'm actually surprised the AmigaOS licenses are transferable. It would make more sense financially for Hyperion to not allow transfers and force owners of used hardware to buy a new license. Edit: Or better yet, charge subscription fees for updates. It's becoming a commonplace practice, and it would provide a steady stream of revenue. Hyperion would have to start releasing regular, incremental updates, however, even if they're just small bug fixes. Maybe the AmigaOS development model doesn't fit that sort of business model.

Any rough results on what sort of improvements we can expect on graphical performance?

In rough terms, it depends on the graphics card that people choose, but it should be better than what people are using now. The CPU to graphics card bandwidth is definitely higher, and my Radeon HD 4650 is definitely faster than my Radeon 9000 pro and my Radeon HD 4350 PCI, or any other card below that.

OK - let's be a bit more specific...

HD4350 PCI in a Sam440 vs AmigaOne/XE vs Sam460ex

Sample tests for each box with same card.

And then for the fun of it...
Fastest card you have on 460ex vs. fastest card for Sam440/AmigaOne XE

A quake time demo or something else anyone can try out.

And if too much hassle or things are still in flux don't worry about it.

Most interesting to me would be fastest card on a Sam440/A1-XE vs fastest card on a Sam460ex.

Thanks

Excellent News!

Stops the trolls from saying they are holding it back for x1000 release.

Just wondering however any news on the Boing Ball case? It be nice if you could have it ready soon for maybe sam460 owners.

As for me personally I'm not a beta tester so I'm going to wait until drivers are fixed and what the feedback is from the first users, plus I would love to find out the final price and release date the x1000 is likely to have. So most likely wait for a few more months, a birthday present sounds good, in July hopefully we all know whats going on by then.

"The board is available at a suggested price of 749,00 EUR (including AmigaOS 4.1)"

Ok, this helps me to "hold my horses" to not to build another x86 toy...

@itix

"It is not cheap"

It's "ok" priced in AOS4 land. And there are not too many options if people want to play with PCIe-x16 (in x4 speed) etc cards with their AOS system.

Too bad that also DDR2 prices are rising....

Now I have to put my money where my mouth is, but that will not be this month (January 2011), but most probably the next! Counting my pennies and returning empty bottles and crates to the store to collect the deposit.

Very fine news!

@gregthecanuck

Comparing the two machines is difficult unless you have a number of graphics cards. The A1-XE will only accept an AGP or 5V PCI card, while the Sam460ex will only accept a PCI-e or 3.3V PCI card, so you can't use the one card in both machines unless it is dual-voltage PCI.

The best you can hope for is someone with PCI-e and AGP versions of the same card. Or you could use the built-in SATA port and a single HDD, if you have a dual-voltage PCI card.

Full systems will be added shortly.

Glad to hear that because I'm only interested in full systems. I can wait around a month since I plan to get AOS box in a month or so.

My question is because I'm sensitive to pricing:
- apart from Sam460, will you be selling 440ep or 440flex as full systems too?
- which of the three mainboards allows me to use any WiFI? Will 460 make it possible? (I mean drivers mainly)

Thanks for the answers.

Can someone cleary say, if it possible to use in sam460:

New modern PCI-e RadeonHD + SATA HDD + SATA DVDROM at one time ? I.e. can i just plug all of this at one time, just boot from CD , and install stuff ?

I ask becasue there all those "mutal exclusive" notes, which a bit scare me.

http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/03/01/netgears-universal-wi-fi-internet-adapter-is-a-gift-from-the-gods/

with this little piece of hardware you can use wifi with ANY amiga that has got an ethernet port.

with an pci-sata card there are no problems at all. the pci-e x1 slot is still usable this way. just ignore the onboard sata port.

Wow in 2011 we got 2D acceleration, Amazing !
That said nobody is going to make 3D games for the Amiga so nothing is missed here.
