software OS4   software OS4 : AmiCygnix V1.1 released
   posted by CygnusEd on 21-Jun-2012 9:16:42 (5439 reads)
A new version of the AmiCygnix packages AmiCygnix-Base and AmiCygnix-Tools are now available on OS4-Depot. An existing installation of AmiCygnx 1.0 can be updated - older software package can still be used.
Upcoming AmiCygnix software will depend on this new version.

AmiCygnix is a Unix environment, which makes it easy to port Unix software with or without a GUI.

Read more...

The main enhancements in the base package:
  • Support of programs compiled with GTK+ 2.24 and GTK+ 3.x.

  • A new (experimental) display driver, which opens the X11 display in a normal intuition window on the workbench.

  • The X server can now be launched several times without problems. So you can now - for example - launch several applications separately on the workbench.

  • Upcoming software and included programs in the "Software" drawer provides a new script for a standalone start in an own window or screen. A special version of myX11Setup is included for this.

  • A new icon theme for AmiCygnix programs in AmigaOS 4.1 style.

  • All workbench icons in these packages are now in AmigaOS 4.1 style.

  • The previous version of AmiCygnix could not be installed on partitions formatted with JXFS. This bug is now solved.

  • The optional tools package contains newer versions of the so far included software and a new settings editor for the desktop background (all compiled with GTK+ 2.24):

  • The file manager "ROX-Filer 2.10"

  • The web browser "NetSurf 2.8"

  • The text editor "Leafpad 0.8.18.1" with UTF-8 support

  • The image viewer "GPicView 0.2.2"

  • The PDF viewer "Xpdf 3.03"

  • The settings editor for GTK+ 2 and 3 "LXAppearance 0.5.1"

  • The settings editor for the Openbox window manager "ObConf 2.0.3"

  • The settings editor for the desktop background "Gsetroot 1.1"

    Thanks, that was it, I didn't see the tools-archive but it's installed and working fine

    There is a problem with the width of the amicygnix screen : just use the calendar (right-down the screen).

    Or move the screen (but other than vertical move) with the drag bar.

    By the way thanks and it's already really faster than V1.

    @Kicko

    As tommysammy said, the next release will be Gimp 2.6.11. The port is finished and I'm working on the packages.
    Gimp 2.8 should be possible, but it will need some time. Some dependencies are not solved yet. And there is another problem. Gimp 2.8 make intensive use of the new GEGL library. GEGL is extremely slow - you will see it in Gimp 2.6. It is optionally used there for some operations.

    What is the resolution you're using? Can you make a screenshot of this problem?

    Just curious, is all this quite fast on an A1-X1000?

    Please report problems to the author of the program "Michael Christoph" (http://meicky-soft.de).

    I'll let him know. It's a minor issue that should be easy to resolve. I'm doing a fresh install of all AmiCygnix packages and haven't found any other problems. Thanks for the hard work. AmiCygnix is a "must-have" Amiga application.

    I have downloaded both the base and tools and installed, I have to say very impressed, runs on a better screen resolution (1920 x 1080) and seems much faster.

    Thank you for all the hard work, much appreciated

    The update seems to work well so far. Good news for me
    But don't be afraid to tell me any problem.

    Will there be a version that installs without having the AmigaOS SDK installed?
    I am getting an "SDK:" -error, when trying to install...

    @Nicsoft

    The AmiCygnix package has only a few dependencies to the SDK. Some very few perl scripts are included, which are using the perl interpreter of the SDK. The second is the included binary of the abc-shell "sh", which may want to try to access data in the SDK.
    The only part in the installer script where the abc-shell is used, is the initialisation of the MIME settings. So I guess it happens there?

    Please check your PATH variable with "getenv PATH" in a shell. Maybe there is a path included starting with "/SDK"?

    Basically I need to know, at which part of the installation procedure the problem occurs.

    @Nicsoft

    Thanks for the screenshots! Now it is clear.
    As I thought, it is a problem of the abc-shell and it happens while initialisation of the MIME data.
    Can you make a log file with Snoopy, so I can see what the abc-shell wants to access? Snoopy is available on OS4-depot.
    I suggest to use the expert mode while installation and to start Snoopy after copying the "Install-Archive" drawer.

    Thanks!

    Did you double-click the 'Shutdown' icon?

    Edgar has replied by email and he gave me instructions how to solve the problem!

    I was told to launch these commands in a shell.

    "SetEnv HISTFILE /Cygnix/CygnixPPC/var/abc-shell/history"

    "SetEnv ENV /Cygnix/CygnixPPC/var/abc-shell/variables"

    "SetEnv PATH /Cygnix/CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/bin:/Cygnix/CygnixPPC/bin:/Cygnix/CygnixPPC/X11R6.3/bin:/C"

    Then (again) run the Installer (Base-installation)...
    Now it worked flawlessly!

    But the same problem that Pierre55 had, occurred. AmiCygnix wouldn't quit!
    The solution was to reboot and install the Tools-installation. Now Quit among other things works as supposed to...

    Hi,

    Maybe I missed something because still can't quit after doing what you explained, should I change to AmiCygnix directory because doing the commands?

    While I installed the base program I have a requester asking for the SH files, I did the assign to SDK/c.

    Thank you

    I have this same problem and I installed the tools package as well. I installed 1.1 on top of the old installation. (I have SDK installed.)

    @Pierre55
    You don't have to reset your machine. Open Amiga Shell on Workbench and type Status command. Then check what process number you have in front of ../../XGeekPPC and type Break command and that number. That will kill X11 server/AmiCygnix.

    @Pierre55 @Tomppeli

    Well, I did a "clean" new installation. Not an update.
    Therefore the need of the commands from Edgar (CygnusEd).

    Your problems seems to be update-related (1.0-1.1)!?

    Let's see what Edgar can come up with...

    The solution posted in #35 is only to fix the problem while installation. If a requester appeared asking for "SDK:", you need this solution or you wait for a fixed package I want to release.

    I'm also working on the shutdown problem. I've found already a problem and I need someone to test it. Do you like to test it or anybody else?
