Announcement   Announcement : AROS meets Linux = AEROS
posted by phoenixkonsole on 11-Jul-2012 20:37:14 (7907 reads)
Tadaaaa!!! No.. this is not Jokers pencil trick ; )

In roughly 3 hours you can download the first public release of AEROS.

What is AEROS?
AEROS is a hybrid distribution of AROS (www.aros.org) and Unix (in the moment debian 6.0 is used) available for ARM and x86 systems.

Why?
AROS is a wonderful OS (an opensource reimplementation of the classic Amiga OS). This means it is fast, and not only because of the small footprint it is very fast.
Many times faster than Linux with all its „lightweight“ desktops.

But why running on OS hosted on another? Doesn’t it slow down?
No! AROS hosted (here in form of AROS Broadway) uses less resources than any desktop manager for linux offering the same functionality.
So in fact it is faster. Especially on slow ARM systems AROS hosted will blow your mind.

What are the Benefits?

Benefits for AROS users of having Linux under the hood:
- more drivers (printers, scanners, NIC, Videocards and more
- you are able to run every Linux app including Wine (which enables the use of Windows (TM) apps without the need of Windows(TM))
- AROS - Developers can use Linux development tools
- AROS apps can utilize Linux tools to enhance there own functionalitiy.
- Single AROS processes can be forced to run on a single core.

Benefits for Linux users of having AROS on top Linux
- Fast desktop, maybe the fastest on LInux
- Allows you to run AROS apps and games too, most of them come from Amiga and have a low footprint. You will like how fast they are.
- Allows you to use JanusUAE - an integrated Amiga emulation... classic 68k Amiga apps can be used in coherency mode

PS: Don’t worry ... TUX is smiling.. so he likes it ; )

I've not cracked it, yet, but I will. This post coming from the Raspberry Pi with AEROS on the screen. (It's a bit of a cheat as it is actually Midori which is running at the same time as AEROS in OpenBox.)

I need to give up for today: changing my brain from Amiga to Linux mode and back again might cause it to explode!

Roy Leith

I've been told that AROS is based on Linux, that is AROS sits on top of a Linux kernel. Is this why a project like AEROS is possible?

No it is not. There are different versions that can run alone or hosted. There is support for X86, ARM, PPC and 68k and there are versions that are hosted and makes use of the hosted environment for network, sound... Examples are Linux, Android, Mac (X86), Windows and others. Certainly the main environment with the biggest support is installing Aros native on X86.

If I understand correctly you should be able to run 3D apps. too on the Aros side.

Thanks for this, I just about gave up on it.

I look to replace CrunchBang this week.

Yes. HostGL makes it possible.

This could be one of the best distros with retro appeal.
I have HD4290 graphics and could get me a slightly better card for less than 100 US.
I do not have to hunt down much hardwware for a while.

I am fixing some bugs right now.
Also I am trying to include AROS vision 68k to be run with JanusUAE.

Also i am merging the AROS side with latest AROS Broadway.

Managed to get Aeros to boot under VMware by upping the Mem size as suggested, thanks.

I've also managed to install it to a virtual HDD. However, It does assume you know how to set up partitions under Linux. Luckily I do! An auto installation option would be better for the novice.

I have a couple of questions. I'm not able to change the screen size from the 800x600 default. Changing it in prefs makes no difference. Does grub.cfg need to be edited as with Icaros Desktop?

Also 'configuring the sound card' does not appear to work. It opens a teminal window asks for my root password and closes down the window without doing anything after I enter the password. Therefore I have no sound capabilities.

However, I realise this is very much WIP and congratulate you on what you have acheived so far.

Thanks

TrevorD

Hi Trevor,

i will upload a new ISO later with a lot of fixes, latest AROS files and new apps on both sites. Some changes to the themes too. (Close button on the left for example)

If you use it in virtualbox or VMware you don't need to setup audio, video manually.

Just click in VB or VMware gui on the install Guest-addition / drivers. This will add a cd-image which will be launched automatically.

There is something wrong with the sudoers in this image.
Maybe you should give it a try as root.

Forget the soundcard icon on the desktop ; )
Just install VMware drivers.

Small howTo...

@yodoo2
Thanks but the Pi but I don't need one. I can do it on my Efika... the only problems seems to be the xorg.conf for some users. So we could offer some for different setups..
and a easy way to edit xorg.conf.

Basically.. it would be a help if someone can send me his working Raspberry xorg.conf

Ok good, but tried to download again and got this:

+++
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /debian6-19-04-2012.img.7z on this server.
+++

Can you please notify when the dl link is working again, so I do not have to check constantly?

Thank you very much!
