Software News   Software News : Aladdin4D to go Shared-Source
   posted by DiscreetFX on 8-May-2013 16:30:14 (5425 reads)
In an effort to renew development efforts for Aladdin4D we will be making it shared-source commercial software. What this means is source code to Aladdin4D 5.x & 6.0 will be shared with key programmers in the AROS, AmigaOS 4 & MorphOS communities. Money will be paid out to any major changes they make to the code for example adding a MUI interface, native MorphOS or AmigaOS 4 version, completing Aladdin 4D 6.0 for OS X, Etc. Because of programmer issues Aladdin4D 5.x was taken off the market in October 2012... (Please click read more.)

Aladdin4D will be available again as a Instant Download but any sales will go into the programmer pool to upgrade the software. When DiscreetFX acquired Aladdin4D the dream was to have a modern maintained beginners 3D animation/rendering package for AmigaOS, MorphOS & AROS. Hopefully the shared-source initiative can make that dream come alive.

We welcome your views regarding this change of plans and look forward to your feedback. We only want the best for Aladdin4D and it's installed customer base and fans.

Best regards,

DiscreetFX Team

Sorry for being on topic.. ;)

I was wondering in what state the source code was in..

what need to be done at its current state.

is MUI a must or can you port it another gui system?

I may be interested in looking at the source to see if its something I can work with.

René

@DiscreetFX

Good Luck!

However, I fear there is no viable market for such commercial software, not anymore. Probably only bounty for full open source could save this once great application for future (and give you at least some money).

@fryguy

It would be better to set up a bounty for open sourcing it instead imo.

Such an approach did actually exist back then...

After acquisition of Aladdin 4D by DiscreetFX, donors were told to contact Bill Panagouleas for refund.

@thread

I suppose this was the logical next step given this thread's topic.

Discreetfx courtesy amiga.org:

Just making it official, Aladdin4D current programmer was fired on May 9th, 2013 do to lackluster performance. It's doubtful that he ever had the technical skill for developing 3D animation software. He was never even able to figure out how to make the program render anything but garbage. I blame myself in part for believing he could work on this type of software without any prior proof of concepts from him.

Mod's note: We cannot allow unsubstantiated allegations here. If you have *proof*, then the Staff will be happy to discuss and take action. We as a site will not allow rumours and 'he said/she said' to harm a related company, but we also won't allow a company to defraud our members, (if we can honestly help either!) Thank you for your understanding.

@thread

I would like to ask that "dirty laundry" not be aired on this site. If there are personal issues at play between DFX and other parties, these should be handled in private or through legal processes, and not here.

We will not condone dishonest practices made by organisations. Equally, we cannot tolerate the continued slandering or libellous remarks made either by members of AW or the organisations targeted by them to continue here.
