Right, Firewire works on the Pegasos, but the MorphOS support isn't there yet. It shouldn't be long in coming, given the pace of MOS development. Firewire is definitely a draw on both these products though, and it'll be interesting to see the actual AmigaOne Lite implementation, and not just the feature list of a prototype.

The full specifications for the AmigaOne Lite are as follows:
2x AGP graphics on board with PAL/NTSC TV out

I was dubious about this idea (the 'lite' board), BUT GET A LOAD OF THIS!! PAL/NTSC out! It's a 12000!

| Well, this is a massive step in the right direction for the AmigaOne. If I can get one between $300 and $400 I'll probably go for it. As far as I'm concerned this is the first REAL AmigaOne. A machine without built in sound and graphics has no right even laying claim to the Amiga name. Plus the inclusion of USB2.0 and Firewire marks this as a true modern day computer.
But I think it should have an AGP slot, or better yet, a custom edge connector so you can add AGP/PCI/Zorro3/Whatever slots in the future.
The closest Commodore came to "getting it right" was the CD32, but they blew it by crippling the unit's expansion capablilities.
If they had made one base board that could be anything from a CD32 game system to a top of line 4000 equivelent, they could have manfactured one computer and stayed slovent. Commodore might not have gone under at all.
It's great to deliver video out of the box. It's NECCECARY for any machine trying to live up to the Amiga legacy, but the best onboard video in the world will be outdated by the time the board actually ships. This is true with any computer.
Set a minumum standard for the Amiga video, but still allow a video upgrade option that allows growth, as well as other expansion options.
Make ONE board that will last the user for next 5 years of new technologies, make it well, and make a lot of them to get the best per unit cost. Then it WILL sell.
The AmigaOne Lite captures the spirit that made us all love Commodore. Everything is there ready to use, but it also has the limitation that killed Commodore in the end. The thinking that you have to make different hardware for different users.
If Mac on Linux is still around these board will make killer Mac clones even if the "Amiga" ends up a dismal failure.
It's a lot cheaper to offer a single upgradable machine than to make 2 different boards and make end users choose between upgradability or useability. |
