Miscellaneous News : AmiGift (0.5) - p2p (Kazaa/ED2K/Gnutella etc) client screenshot released |

AmiGIFT, a Kazaa client for AmigaOS has been making steady progress over on sourceforge. The team still have many bugs to iron out before a release will be made publice, but they have released a single screeshot displaying the stage it has reached. It uses MUI, and appears to have a very well defined UI setup. Take a look for yourselves here. |

| I posted this on Amiga.org. It seems nobody cares, but here it is anyway:
@Wilse:
You can justify it all you want... I'm just dissapointed. But not suprised.
I'm just sad that people think the Amiga *needs* this.
In a perfect world, the Amiga platform would attract users out of sheer brilliance; instead, if Amigift is anything to go by, we're just emulating stuff you can already get on other platforms... don't get me wrong some of them are necessary, just like running water in your house, but still..
All I'm saying is, people can download kiddie porn, MP3z, and Adobe Photoshop on any old computer. They're hardly going to buy an Amiga to do this. And if they do: they will come to the Amiga expecting to get all their software for free, just like on Wintel. They will pirate software like the animals they are, just like they do in Wintel land. They will not have any concept of community responsibility.
Amiga is doomed, as usual...

I don't entirely agree. There will be people who fit the profile that you just outlined, but that doesn't mean everyone will. Most people use p2p for music and video downloads (and porn). I know there is alot of software traded there as well, but I think the numbers are far smaller than for music and such. I can tell you that I have used services like Kaaza myself, but still I go out and buy the software package if I need it. So I don't think that "one profile for all p2p users" fit's so well. |

Perhaps you have a point. Still, I don't know many people who own even a fraction of the software they have installed. Even the ones who don't use Kazaa.
Anyway, I was mainly upset at the reaction to this release, not the release itself.
As for music... I must admit I have some pirated MP3s (I was not pretending to be angel at any time, just observing the reaction, like I said). They are movie soundtracks. I feel bad having them, but I intend to buy them when I have some money (my excuse for now is "poor uni student", weak I know...) Most of my music is noname stuff from mp3.com, mp3.com.au, modarchive, etc. Most of that stuff is pretty bad but there are good ones, it does take effort to do the "filtering". Example: a favourite of mine is "Tor audio", their "rap" songs are crap but the "dreamy techno" stuff like Drum Therapy, Fourty Two, etc. are great.
Generally though, I don't listen to much music (certainly not pop) play games or watch movies... I must be pretty boring

| Personally I use p2p software for comics. There are a lot of oldies/rarities that I would never had the chance to read otherwise.

| The only thing that annoyed me was reading the thread on ANN. At leat 4 Anonymous cowards have stated "great, now I can use AOS to d/l AOS4 and warez etc".
But then these are people who are unlikely to buy the h/w needed to actually run the things they intend to pirate anyway. Sad...very sad. _________________ Test sig (new)
