Bassano del Grappa (Italy) 1-12-2006: The official website of Sam440ep has been updated with a galley of pictures taken from Electronica 2006 in Munich where Sam was displayed at AVNET booth. During last weeks the website was also updated with a french and german version.

I thought twice and then three more times about posting this... Ultimately I've decided to go ahead.

Hmm.. You really seem to have no idea how much the average user is willing to pay to "experience" OS4 do you?

It was Rogue himself that said the OS3.9 sources were used to create the OS4 ones (via them using the same developers), so it's not like they built Rome from scratch. They ported an OS and added some functionality to it, even though it's missing many required (for most users) modern features.

But hey, Hyperion can charge whatever they want for OS4 as far as I'm concerned. Do you think that embedded users are going to pay an extra 100 EUR for a device because it's running OS4? An extra 100EUR for a cell phone or PDA because it's running OS4? What about the much talked about/specualted PS3? (or any console for that matter). If OS4 becomes available for them, do you think Joe Public is going to to pay 100 EUR to try OS4 as opposed to a 50EUR Linux boxed retail package? Yeah, good luck with that....

And I tell you what... so that I don't "clog up" any more of your precious forum, I'll just walk away here and now. Hell, Amiga doesn't need me. I'm just one person, right? What do I matter? I should have stayed away the last time.

Wow... Just because yoodoo2 was being flippant doesn't give you license to deride the efforts of a group who deserve at least a modicum of respect. Hyperion didn't just port AOS 3.9, if that had been the case, we would have had AOS 4 years ago. To liken AOS 4 to a straight port of AOS 3.9 is pretty disingenuous.

Besides, who says that "embedded users" will pay $100 or 100¤? Wouldn't an embedded manufacturer building a device like a "cell phone or PDA" want to negotiate volume pricing? IMO, the premium of 100 in whatever currency, is based on individual desktop users. Not for an application like cell phones, DVRs, or any other consumer electronics. Hyperion has to recoup it's investment somehow. I would gather that the volume of potential AOS 4 desktop users is far smaller than the volume of potential AOS 4 consumer electronics users. Given that they are presently relying on the desktop market, I don't see how they could charge less. I wouldn't be surprised if they ultimately take a loss on AOS 4. But for the record. I'd be overjoyed to use AOS 4 on a PDA. And I wouldn't mind paying a premium of up to $100¤ for it. Not after my experiences with Windows Mobile (< =2003), it's slow and clunky. Given the same hardware, I believe AOS 4 would trounce WM any day. Granted other OSes like BeOS (and it's derivatives), MorphOS, and QNX (among others) would probably achieve the same or similar results... Far better performance on a comparable hardware platform. But we're talking about AOS 4 here.

As for the PS3... Until a version of AOS 4 is available for that platform, I wouldn't speculate on AOS 4 pricing myself. Personally I don't think you'll see any commercial OS available for the PS3 besides Sony's... Unless of course you include DOSBox, UAE, or WINE... That aside. I would tend to believe that if AOS 4 (or it's derivatives) were to appear on game consoles or other PC platforms, the pricing would change to reflect the potential user base

Don't ever forget that the Amiga is now a cottage industry. Those commercial interests that are keeping Amiga alive today do so pinching every penny (i.e. Nova Design, Individual Computers, Hyperion). Those that are doing so for free (take your pick on OS4 Depot), do so out of charity. They deserve some credit and some respect. If we're lucky that credit and respect might just translate into the Amiga regaining some of the ground it has lost these past many years.

As for your leaving these forums and/or the Amiga all together, that's your choice. But if you choose to stay, keep your vitriol to yourself. I don't necessarily agree with everything what AInc. has done and I don't necessarily agree with everything that Hyperion has done. But this constant bitching is why I lurk in the forums instead of participating. All you have to do is look at the tone of this, my post. More often than not, the attitudes of those here piss me off. Whether they're fanboys or malcontents. I'd rather not fuel either... I suspect this post may do just that, but every once in a while I feel the need to rant!

...

Look I understand People are People, but perhaps you need to consider a New Dress. How long has Amiga been knocking at Deaths Door??? The Bottom Line is It's No Good complaining about Hyperion unless you've gone Walking In their Shoes for a while.

Its already been confirmed that the cost of OS4 is not set and is down to the contract between the individual hardware company and Hyperion.

This discussed a few weeks ago I think?
