Hardware News   Hardware News : Sam460ex available with AmigaOS 4.1
   posted by elwood on 27-Jan-2011 23:00:06 (25491 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, Italy - 27 Jan, 2011

ACube Systems Srl is pleased to announce the immediate release of Hyperion's AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 for Sam460ex. Boards and installation CDs are now shipping to resellers.

The board is running at 1.15 Ghz and allows all Amigans to use modern graphic cards thanks to its PCI express slot.
Other features include: 7 USB ports and Gigabit ethernet.

The board is available at a suggested price of 749,00 EUR (including AmigaOS 4.1).
Price excludes local taxes and shipping costs.
Sam460ex AmigaOS 4.1 version:

The version of AmigaOS 4 that will be shipped with the Sam460ex is still to be considered beta. It is made from AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 on which specific components for Sam460ex were added.
You will still have a valid AmigaOS 4 licence that allows you to download the next AmigaOS update when it will be available from Hyperion Entertainment.
Notes about the AmigaOS 4.1 CD currently shipping with Sam460ex

Currently RadeonHD driver supports the following chipsets with full 2D hardware acceleration and DDC:

* R500 (with compositing support) - Radeon X1550, X1650, X1950 and others
* R600 - Radeon HD 2400 - HD 3450 - HD 3650 and others
* R700 - Radeon HD 4350 - HD 4650

The audio driver will be released on OS4depot as soon as it is ready.

The driver for the onboard SATA port is still experimental. It is not loaded by the kicklayout file but you still can use it (at your own risk). It is located in Devs: and you can use it through Mounter.

The final version will be released with an OS update. In the meantime we suggest to use a Silicon Image 3512 PCI card or an USB-SATA combo PCI card with a Silicon Image chip.

Please read the manual for more information on the board.

It was a very long road and we wish to thank everyone for your patience and support.

Compliments to all people involved!

I'lll be very happy to use AmigaOS 4 with speed improvements and yes, I've already ordered one!
My preferred (expensive) hobby toy will surely make my nights very short... dark circles are coming...

Wow in 2011 we got 2D acceleration, Amazing !

At least regarding HD 4350 and HD 4650 cards, 2D acceleration for Windows "came" out 3 years ago, when the cards were released.

That said nobody is going to make 3D games for the Amiga so nothing is missed here.

I have a couple of 3D games I'd like to port someday, and probably more will come from other porters.

Would you prefer no 2D accel. for these cards? Or is it just a problem it's mentioned, what's your point?

I think the point is it's not acceptable to release something without 3d acceleration. Don't you think Amiga users deserve something other than beta software? No 3D, no audio driver, high price... No sale.

I think ACube is doing wonders here. My respect for them grows leaps and bounds every time they release new hardware. They are simply amazing. Too bad they are being held back by the OS.

Some of the first releases of MorphOS 2.0 for Efika also didn´t support sound... AROS support for sound cards was also rather limited for a long time (at least in regard to VM solutions).

Sure, it would be much better with 3D accelleration, but there are many tasks where Radeon HD can show its power even in 2D: faster UI (nice for webbrowsing), faster GFX in emulators (I like emulators) faster... nearly all.

Congrats to Acube and Hyperion

Is there any clear indication anywhere that Hyperion has anything to do with this release?

It might just be that English isn't the first language of the people at Acube, but the whole tone of that announcement feels off....

"It is made from AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 on which specific components for Sam460ex were added" does not sound like a Hyperion-made release; It sounds like "we took the Sam440 CD and added some drivers which we contracted". SATA driver not being loaded by kicklayout --- why would that be?

I didn't buy MorphOS 2.0 and I don't use AROS. Also AROS is free.

I was thinking the same thing when I read that.

Makes me think they at least coordinated this with Hyperion.

Maybe you missed this news item:

http://acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=news&id=69

And other than that... the kernel is different for each supported platform so it must be adapted specifically for Sam460ex and that's something that can only be done by Hyperion if you want to sell it.

Are you implying that ACube Systems is willing to commit an act of piracy by selling AmigaOS4 WITHOUT Hyperion's licence?

Maybe you don't know how AmigaOS 4 works: there is a kicklayout file that list every components (including device drivers) that must be loaded at boot. ACube opted to not load the sata2 internal driver by default. Anyway it is stored inside the Devs: drawer and users can load it manually using the "mounter" utility. This will obviously change in the future.

What is so exciting on a pre-Alpha system that costs 1.000 Euros?

@Cool_amigaN

I have personal no problem whit the price (749,00 EUR) + shipment and tax , and it’s defiantly not a pre alpha system, it’s more like beta system, on the software side we are a bit behind, drivers are complicated to write and Hans is doing a good job on video drivers, I know some countries have been suffering from bad economics, I think we should be happy some electronics is being made in Europe, when the slave labor costs in china is so low.

On the 3d side, we are behind because we are expecting a new 3d api, I don’t mind there are not that many 3D games, and most of the games I have played on the PC before, I also have PS3 whit excellent games.

I’m not worried about 3d, I’m worried about the change in network protocols on global scale from IP4 to IP6, and this will affect how Amiga computers can be used, If nothing is done soon.

From the announcement “The driver for the onboard SATA port is still experimental.”

If you think about it for a second, how important is the single onboard SATA port, when you need an USB/SATA combo card to connect a CDROM and a HD, also if you read the manual, you notices that you need to disable the internal SATA to use the expansion slot.

How long have we been promised that shiny new 3D api? I'm getting tired of hearing about it.

I'm not worried about IP6 at all. We may run out of addresses but in general the conversion has been very slow. It's not like we are going to wake up one day and find that IP4 is gone.

But of course when IP4 no longer functions and we are still waiting for an IP6 stack on Amiga someone will come along and say "I don't mind not having IP6. I don't use the internet much anyway".

Good news! Unlikely to buy one for now, as I bought a Sam-flex last year which is fast enough for most of my daily uses.

Of course the usual suspects will complain about price etc, ignoring the market realities of producing a specialist board like this, but I can't imagine these folk will ever buy a next generation board - they'd rather sit back and bemoan the price/spec/lack of AGA of every new board that's released.

I think you "jumped the gun" here. Yours is a serious statement, even implying it would be stupid. Like someone can do an official announcement hoping that Hyperion wouldn't fight for their rights.
In my opinion Umisef wanted to know whether Hyperion was actively involved in this or Acube had access to the source code and just applied some changes to make it work on the new board.
Again, i could be wrong...

Hopefully when the new Sam boards begin coming into circulation will see a bigger and cheaper second hand market for the older Sams, tho I doubt it will stop the usual suspects moaning about all of the above.

You're right but I simply forgot to add a smile (like I did when replying about the sata driver). I've corrected the sentence.
My native language isn't english and maybe some expression don't translates very well.
