A big hammer comes out the side of the monitor and bashes you in the head for using a sequence that crashes the machine..

End result ..

Machine doesn't crash anymore !!

End of problem !!

What exactly does 'kill' do anyway? Will it kill the task and free its resources or is it more a suspend/ignore option as in pre 4.0.

'Kill' means 'Kill the program off completely and try to free its resources".

Right now, this means exec resources. Whenever a program allocates resources like a message port, this is tracked within ExecSG, and such resources are automatically freed on exit. Other subsystems don't do that yet, but this is planned for the future.

Wow very cool, it'll be nice in Amiga OS when a program crashes it will make me smile and I will say to my friend the grim reaper, "Hello, Who has been bad code today?".

Hello Grim Reaper
Illegal Memory Axes?
Kill task, Bring back RAM.

@Rogue:

Nice work and great follow up explanations as well.

It makes the waiting bearable.

I think I'm just now starting to realize ...

that maybe...
Just maybe...

OS4 is gonna be a very "real" piece of fine work.

The potential here is simply amazing once you start to think about it.

The very things that I've always hated about the Amiga ...

1) ScreenModes
2) The severe showing of age
3) Expensive hardware and patchy add ons
4) Hard drive limitations
5) much, much more

They are all gonna be gone.
Wow!

Could it be true?

Are we finally gonna see an up-to-date Amiga with a brand new OS?

Is it actually gonna be as good as it looks like it's gonna be?

Mui soon to be gone forever?

No more having to patch everything in the system to get it to look and run good?

One day, an actual buisness suite?

New apps and games, that meet today's standards?

Wow!!!

Too good to be true.

Nope 'fraid not, OS4 is certainly going to be a fine piece of work. But alas in some kind of Zen way In a journey of a million milestones, OS4 is just the first step.

It's not going to be the great thing you hope for. It's going to be good, no mistake. The masses of work done on it are really not going to be readily apparent. It'll be like OS3.9 only better in significant way's but in none so revolutionary that it'll rock your world.

Then gradually as you use it you will find small things which will be new that are subtle, but there. and you'll smile and you'll go. "nice" and you'll secretly thank Hyperion.

The biggest difference is that OS4 will be essentially the building block for a new modern OS. No small thing but the difference between what it will be and what people's expectations are will be large. And you can guarantee when it come's out very few will appreciate the work that has gone into it.

Incidently I can't wait for OS4. It's gunna be SOOOOO Cool!

Keep up the good Work Hyperion

I think with every update like this, most of us who are waiting start to see more and more potential for OS4 to be a great product. It already has shown so much potential, I can only imagine what a delight it will be to use on a daily basis. And once the updates like 4.1 and 4.2 are rolled out, it can only get better.

Hyperion and the OS4 team are definitely deserving alot of sucess for thier efforts.

This is yet again a good example how much effort is going into the AmigaOS4 project.

Jurgen is planning to come to Rotterdam for the 4/5th of October to demonstrate the latest developments of AmigaOS4. I will try to be present.
