Anyone feel like making a snapshot of a WB using these icons:
Steel icons
Please? :)

That is a nice icon set. It shouldn't be too hard to cut them out and save as png for this icon patch _________________ Test sig (new)

Likewise, having tried PowerIcons myself and spent the time changing a lot of my icons over to PNG I was left undecided too.
My WB was feeling a bit "generic" (if that's the right word) after being plastered with PNG icons from the Crystal pack, so have gone back to good old glow icons for now - but am keeping PowerIcons handy as a tool for viewing PNG icons anyway. Also, had a few bad crashes while using PowerIcons the last day or so, which I can only put down to the icons, as nothing else had changed and my machine is pretty solid normally. |

I hate those dilemmas between the simple, refined and elegant look and, of the messy, funky look. You remain somewhat undecided and of the exact format to follow. Interesting that you have incurred crashes with the PowerIcons. I wonder if others have had problems.
@ DaveyD
Thanks for the link! As soon as I purchase it, I'll have a couple days' worth of fun, deciding which look to go for. _________________

Yep, for sure go with the Glow Icons. See if you can put the gradient menu bars, as we have seen on OS4 screenshots, and you would have the perfect Workbench screen (IMO). I love the backdrop you have on the PowerIcons screen, see if you can port that over to the Glow Icons setup .
The PowerIcons do look very nice, but too Linuxy if you know what I mean. I had Mnadrake 9.0 and then 9.1 on my x86 machine, loved it (the Crystal icons I mean), but can become somewhat bland after a while (maybe vecause it was on an x86 machine!).
Oh well, that's my humble opinion. _________________

Posted this over on the forums too, and xeron reckoned the PowerIcons looks better - now I'm really confused . Think I prefer the GlowIcons look really though. The wallpaper can be easily swapped, the one in the Glow Icons shot was what I've had for ages and I think I'll stick with it, the other I picked up at kde-look.org when I was looking for icons and thought it would go well with the crystal icons. Think I'll have a play with VisualPrefs later and see if I can get those title bars looking a bit sexier . |

| excuse moi, but for those of you that consider the PNG Icons style to be nice and would like something similar but can't run PowerIcon (either because it crashes your machine, or you use scalos/DOpus Magellan), simply use something like ArtEffect to reduce the colors to something like 64-128 colors with dithering... save them, then select the image and get RAWBInfo information, select the Image2Icon option... select save and voila... a perfect rendition of the PNG Icon... really small (mine reduced from 10KB to 2KB)... allows dragging etc. and will work in OS4.
downside... will use up pens (but in my tests they vwhere not used up that much more -decreased from 107 free to 97 free).
but I don't think that this option (PowerIcon) is really something that should be incorporated into OS4's icon.library perhaps as a contrib, nothing more really...

| ehhh... why use that bloated pile of cr*p?
there are ico converters on aminet there are resource extractors on aminet pretty much all formats can be converted with pbm util's
and why 32-bit PNG, why not use the standard to it's full extent which is 48-bit (24+24). _________________ MicroSoft Game Studios ==

This patch avoid this problem... why not use it? So you can still have "a perfect rendition of the PNG Icon..." with few colours, but without the use of pens...
If you have the same number of colours on a PNG it will be always smaller then the same image on .info _________________ Indigo 3D Lounge, my second home. The Illusion of Choice | Am*ga

| @trgse:
No need to be quite so irate about it.
If DOpus Mag/Scalos used the normal icon.library for their rendering of icons it would be ok, but they have their own custom implementation that would need patching for it to work.
However, under OS4, ideally you will need an OS4 port of the application to best make use of it. Although OS4 is backward compatible to OS3.1, you will miss out on any added functionality provided in OS4 by using DOpus Mag as a WBR.

If it is incorporated into the system it is no longer a hack. Also you don't have to forego the existing icon system to add this png capability. At least giving the option of using one method or the other allows us to do what we want and have the system looking as professional as we want. _________________ Test sig (new)

Edit: have uploaded a grab of my WB after switching back to GlowIcons, let me know which you prefer |
I prefer the look of the pngs personally. They have a more professional air about them, not unlike Masons reworked icon shown futher up. A set made like that would be really nice to have. _________________ Test sig (new)
