News   News : AmigaOS 4.0 Status Report
   posted by Mikey_C on 8-Jun-2004 21:34:48 (47592 reads)
By Hans-Jörg Frieden, Hyperion Entertainment

With the Developer Pre-release finally out, the time is right for a status report on the current state of AmigaOS 4.0. The huge amount of work invested into the project by a lot of dedicated developers means that there has already been substantial progress since the pre-release.

Some of the 68k components of the pre-release have in the meantime been ported to PowerPC code. The most prominent of these are Picasso96 and MUI. While Picasso96 is still in alpha test among the developers, the PPC version of MUI is being beta-tested right now, and is expected to be stabilized soon.

The kernel has also seen some updates. Among other things, it now supports a special resource called the performance monitor. The performance monitor is a hardware profiler within the CPU that allows the programmer extremely fine-tuned profiling of code, even including counting cache hits and misses,instruction timing, pipeline stalls, number of instructions patched, instruction throughput, and a lot of other factors. The performance monitor is controlled via performancemonitor.resource, which offers an easy-to-use API that wraps all this functionality into a few functions.

Further improvements of the kernel include support for the Altivec unit. The Altivec unit is a SIMD vector processing unit. SIMD stands for "single instruction multiple data", meaning that a series of instructions is executed in parallel on multiple streams of data items. Altivec has a lot of uses, most prominently in 3D graphics, but also in image processing, signal processing, compression/decompression, and all general computing applications that inherently work by executing the same instructions on large datasets. Altivec support in the kernel isn't 100% stable yet, but is expected to be fully functional very soon.

Moovid, the well-known media player, has now also been ported to PowerPC, and the results are quite spectacular. An Altivec-enabled version is also in the works. Moovid plays a wide range of movie codecs, including DivX.
A lot of progress has also been made on the shared C library, newlib, and the static C library, clib2.

Subsequently, there is now a new gcc compiler suite that runs up to six times faster than the compiler included in the SDK. Furthermore, since the final release of GNU C 3.4.0 has emerged, it has also been successfully ported to AmigaOS 4.0, and is now used for most components and programs. GCC 3.4.0 features a much better code generator than previous versions, much better support for ANSI C++, and implements the Motorola 'vector' extension for Altivec (meaning you can use types like 'vector unsigned char x' in your program to signify a vector for Altivec).

One program that has seen a tremendous speed boost is AmiPDF. The new PowerPC version of AmiPDF is, depending on input, up to 60 times faster than the original version on the prerelease.

Furthermore we expect a working serial device and floppy support soon.

The USB stack is shaping up as well. It now supports HID devices like keyboards and mice as well as HID joysticks and steering wheels, and USB mass storage devices like USB sticks, flash card readers, 7-in-1 card readers and cameras.

The A1 IDE device now has working UDMA support. Also, interrupts are no longer polled but delivered properly. This means that the device does not require any CPU time for transfers.

Currently, work concentrates on performance optimization. Results look quite good already, and stress tests have shown the device to be 100% reliable - no data corruption occurs

This material will in due course be released for download to registered users of the Developer Pre-release on our web site at:

@FuZion

I think you might be wishing for too much, us people in the UK will probably get it after the Australians.

It seems so strange that I order something 2 sundays ago (just before the bankholiday) and had receved it the same week (on thursday), but the CDs can get to us in the uk 7 working days after being sent to the dealers.

Before anyone thinks I am critising Hyperion I am not, probably Eyetech but not Hyperion

@FuZion
Sven told me two days ago that he had spoken to Alan and would be receiving the CDs "very soon".

@Rogue
Thanks for the status update.

Chris

Yep 'very soon' does sound like Eyetech, could be weeks before anything happens, who knows . I thought about sending an email to them, but you usually get a snotty reply.

I think my A1 is great, but I have never seen or expect to see any positive customer service from Eyetech.

I think it'll be a race between us and the Aussies to see who has to wait the longest for their CDs.

Hey Eyetech, why don't you actually tell us something? This is a rather important event and some word onthe ETA of the discs would be very welcome.

In Eyetech's defence I have always found their customer service pretty good. Whenever I've ordered something from them they've responded pretty quickly, ok, so the A1 took some time but other items have been pretty snappy. They've answered the phone after business hours on several occasions and their email responses have been good.

I must say a quick posting on AmigaWorld or their website to tell us the status would be nice though. A rough estimate would at least stop us all playing the waiting game if we knew it was going to be couple of days or next week, end of the month... etc..

Hmmm,

I don't wanna sound like I'm moaning, after all it's out of people hands at the moment. You cannot account for shipping. In my mind I've been kinda expecting to hear something next week but when you're looking forward to something, sometimes you can't help but be a little bit on edge.

For example, I have a few little jobs to do on my computer, I can't be bothered because I wanna do them on OS4. A little Cinema4D work, a little image processing. I've been fine using my B1260/50 but the closer this OS4 gets to my A1, the more I wanna see how it'll handle a little rendering, processing etc...

Ooh, there's some bitchin' at ANN ... as usual.

Nice to see that things are still making progress though :)

I'll get myself a system once it is released fully. That's what I said 2/3 years ago ... ah well.

Does DPaint V (or IV AGA) or at least PPaint work on OS4? Screenshots? I've been lacking screenshots, I was expecting more since the prerelease came out. Oh well.

I'll probably be last of all, then. I was one of the very earliest purchasers of the A1, shortly after Ole-egil, and there were no dealers carrying it yet, so I purchased it direct from Eyetech. However, I live in Seattle, in the US. So I'll definitely get it after everyone in the UK.

But, booting from a floppy drive via a USB port can only happen when the laptop computer in question recognizes its USB ports on power up. I happen to own two different laptops which each do not recognize that their USB ports exist until Windoze is up and running. Thus, booting from a USB device for this machine becomes irrelevant. Similarly, this machine's PCMCIA ports are asleep until Windoze is running, so no booting from a SCSI device such as an external CD ROM is possible on either machine. I am hoping that the AmigaOne will provide the sort of flexibility that my laptops do not, by being able to boot from SCSI or USB external drives. This brings me to my question: does the A1 support SCSI ? I want to buy an A1 with a SCSI HD, rather than an IDE.

Hmmm. I don't get it. UK should have it already. I thought Eyetech was a bit ahead of the rest when it comes to getting the cd's.

If I get the cd before you do something is wrong. But you know what will happen. Ohh it's out and now you still complain? I sure hope you do have it fast.

I hear that a lot about Eyetech. I don't deal with them but I have heard this kind of stuff a lot. It surely would effect my decision to buy something there. And I think for other people too. You just cannot ignore questions. And I don't want to hear the words, we are so busy we don't have time for that. That's all wrong. Customers are very important. I do see positive things about them too. But also this negative stuff.

By the way, people that want to ask were there cd is have the rigth to do so. It's not moaning or bitching or whatever. I think a lot of dealers got those questions and might get tired of it but just deal with it. Oh my dealer is OK! (Just saying before he pulls my cd out of the mail)

The minute they had that program out I ordered one. That was in 2002. I think you had to decide in a few days. The board would arrive in April and 6 months later you would have a beta of OS4. Well, the board arrived in 2003 and the beta is still not here.

Sounds like my story. I put my order in back in May of 02 . . . .
I too am waiting to hear something from Eyetech.
Will Seattle or the S.F. area get it first??? Let me know when you get yours.

I read somewhere classic Amiga+PPC version is in beta too, so I would like to ask. Will be there also native support for FastATA (PowerFlyer) or Elbox has still the same policy (I am sure everybody know what I mean. I hoped for Linux drivers for ages ...but I give up)

Well let me advise that PPaint works on classic systems with graphics card displays. I have run PPaint right on up to 1600x1200 screens on a 15" multiSync.

To successfully run ANY DPaint version on such a system the output has to use the D23 RGB port, and bypass the graphics card. This is because DPaint uses the Amiga graphics.

Guess what? The AmigaOne hardware uses a graphics card. The Cyberstorm-PPC & the Blizzard-PPC retain their original motherboard graphics chips, but do ANY users not output via graphics card add-ons?

If you need DPaint V that badly there is always UAE.
