No that's not true. Only the specific router port where the 100 Mbit computer is connected to will run at 100 Mbit. The rest will run at Gbit speeds. |
Yes, that's true, until you want to enable Jumbo frames with GigE, then it's back to all or nothing, without segregation via VLAN. _________________ Are we not done with the same silly arguments and flames yet??!

you'd see more sales on an Efika-like system, than the (to me) overpriced SAMs. |
Yeah, but then you'd probably get a lot of complaints about it being slow or non-expandable (if it was much cheaper). As I said, it is IMHO a reasonable compromise given what chips were available at the time, and (presumably) the amount of boards that ACube can sell (it may be that Efika also had bigger manufacturing runs). _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. | @Phantom Sam440-Flex is not a "new car" compared to the current Sam440, but rather a slightly newer model of the SAME "car" - it has a few extra bells & whistles (and something removed), but otherwise it is identical. And it has exactly the same performance.
It might be *nice* to have a Flex, but for most people it shouldn't make any real difference. Exactly how many PCI cards do you intend to install?!? For example:
When I bought my old PC to run Amithlon, it was a *huge* beast, very expandable, I fitted an Ethernet card, SCSI card, TV card, etc, but it was also extremely difficult to take anywhere & took up far too much space. So for my next PC I went to the other extreme - a tiny Shuttle PC (same size as my Sam case), with almost everything I wanted built-in, but only two PCI-Express slots, one of which was needed for a gfx-card (so only one slot in reality). In a couple of years I have not yet bothered to use that one free PCI-Express slot, nor the one spare 5.25" drive bay. The 'old' Sam440 is IMHO very similar to my Shuttle PC - only SATA, most needed stuff built-in (e.g. ethernet), but limited expandability. And I am very happy with both! Both are very overpriced if one compares to sub 70¤ x86 boards (wich come with CPU).
Efika+MOS gives very little features for 350¤, while SAM440ep (not flex) gives a lot more features for 700¤, at the same time x86 motherboard with CPU cost below 70¤ and has most "features" (minus AOS4/MOS2 compatibility).
Only insane people or diehard fans buy Efika/SAM as their desktop computer. (unless they've got blue/red pill in their morning coffee)
also... MacMiniG4 cost me 221¤ including delivery costs. I would like to see AOS4 and MOS for that as well.
(I'm still waiting for my SAM.)
And yes, I take my pills daily!

| Some info about the Shuttle XPX lunchbox computers says those are Flex-ATX motherboards. Shuttle doesn't say that themselves, though it seems other discussions think that to be the case. Do you think that Sa440 Flexc would fit in these cases? I have one laying around at home, would be nice to not have to buy a case for it if I can just use that one. Can I make measurements of my case or the motherboard in it and have some confirmation tha it will work together with Sam Flex? It has two PCI brackets on the back, maybe I just can't use the third PCI slot on Sam? _________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad!
