| You know what we all want... 32/24bit Glowicons :)
I figured with the release of the PNG hack/patch that there would be people running around doing this!?!?
Is it even possible? |

| What do you need 24 bit icons for? If an icon is 100x100 pixel in size (which is fairly huge), you get 10'000 pixels. If they all have different colours (not likely but possible) you need 10'000 different colours. So 24 bit icons doesn't make too much sense. 16 bit four colour plus 8 bit for the alpha channel should be more than enough, as each icon can have it's own palette in OS4.
As icons are more than just the picture anyway (e.g. parameters), why go for an existing format like PNG carrying around some weight. This results in slower loading times and fuller disks.
I'd go for a proprietary format, which is a stripped down version of IFF or PNG. AFAIK, this is no change to the current AmigaOS .

Yes png icons are very nice, at Lorraine Design website you can download a good amiga style icon set, but for real classic amiga Glow Icons is better, fast and nice looking anyway. _________________ ikir

| @ikir
Yeah a screenshot would be nice :)
I don't have an amiga around here at work but would still like to see the icons :)
And I presume those are PNG icons? (though it says glow icons so it may not be) If so then I can't use them on my AmigaOS installation anyway, but still, it would be nice to see how they look. And watching them one by one is too much hassle :)

| @Santa
but . . .what are you saying??
Have you tryed PowerIcons?
The loading is faster than GlowIcons at 64 colors!! (even on an 040 at 30 mhz) and they don't eats pens like GlowIcons do.
. . . and if you don't see any difference between AmigaIcons and PowerIcons, clean your lenses too .
So i suggest you, to think twice before posting those BS
Cheers
PS- by the way . . .a very good work, Alessandro _________________

| @Santa:
Santa you forgot that if an image is paletted then you also need to save its palette with it. For colourful icons these 16bit paletted icons will end up being similar sizes to full 32bit icons. Also paletted icons require more processing to render on a high colour system as each palette entry needs to be looked up for each pixels to find out its colour.
32bit icons wil be more efficient, especially for very colourful icons.
Anyway running on an AmigaONE with DMA enabled its probably going to be too quick to notice.
CnlPepper - mmm true colour icons.... |

| @Framiga I don't have a machine running AmigaOS atm. So: No, I haven't tried PowerIcons, but my lenses are clean. So how can I possibly post BS.
Anyway, I really doubt anyone will notice a slowdown on mapping pens on an AmigaONE. Furthermore, I'm not interested in any kinds of hacks (be they fast or furious), because OS4 shouldn't need those. Without progress of the OS for many years, it's obvious that hacks where made to improve the system. But now that AmigaOS is developped further, I won't put hacks on my AmigaONE. These functionalities have to be integrated into the OS (and they will be).
