"[...] a given application running on OS.4.0 would run 4 times faster than on the same processor using Linux".

Sounds like wishful thinking to me... Anyone got more details? Also, how is the MicroA1 coming along? Did Alan mention a shipping date or price point?

Maybe next time you can bring a microphone and a tape recorder?

Anyway, thanks for a write-up well done.

Hi Agnus,

Nice report of the show!

Is it just me, or are these not some big smiles on those grand faces?

De groetjes, Dirk.

Interesting report, kind of wish I had made the effort to get down to Bath now The shot of OS 4 running Quake in a window is very cool - OS 4's looking pretty awesome

Nice report

Things are certainly looking good.

I think someone knowledgable should start putting together a Dual boot installation manual.

Coz it sounds like we're gonna be needing it soon !!

A very good report. Funny too!

I'm a little sceptical to the "four times faster than on Linux"
business. It sounds great, but surely there must be some
context we are missing here?

@ nrose:
Welcome to AW

About the report: short but interesting... and the Quake2 photo simply rocks.

I don't know who came up with this. I can't go into this, but for a very special application this was true. As a general statement it is wrong, since the CPU speed is not going to change depending on the OS installed.

General observation (i.e. Quake II) shows that things run at the same speed.

Actually, Alan said that IBM had done testing, and it had found the AOS4 (alpha) did *context switching* 4 times faster than Linux on the same hardware.

Close though...

Think it's in the audio presentation, which I'll announce pretty soon...

"[...] a given application running on OS.4.0 would run 4 times faster than on the same processor using Linux".

Actually the actual thing said was that an IBM employee, can't remember name wrote a benchmark to run on the Amiga one.OS4 and it ran 4 times as fast as it did under linux.

Alan's point was that if you have a product that runs twice as fast with half the cpu, just because it runs on a light weight OS, you have something you can sell.

*sigh*.

If people listened he actually said they where testing transaction processing (or similar), and they achieved x4 performance.

I think people should be careful not to mis-quote, since this is how rumors get started that put things in a bad light.

Also without full information on the metrics used to assess performance it is hard for us here to speculate exactly whats faster. So lets just leave it as a "good thing(tm)" ;)

Many thanks for the speedy report...

These efforts really helps those of us that lives in "not-so-amiga-lucky" areas of this "little" world...
