Announcement   Announcement : Personal Paint 7.1 for AmigaOS 4.0
posted by DaveyD on 6-Jan-2004 21:22:35 (9629 reads)
Amiga Inc. and Cloanto are delighted to announce that Personal Paint 7.1 will be available on the upcoming AmigaOS 4.0 operating system.

The Personal Paint series of 2D graphics and animations applications has been a mainstay of the application base for the Amiga platform ever since its introduction in 1992 and it is also a star attraction of the Cloanto Amiga Forever package. As Cloanto considers a new version of the product for AmigaOS 4.0, it has decided to show its commitment to the Amiga platform and community by making the source code of the current version available to Amiga Inc., allowing them to create a PowerPC native version for the upcoming AmigaOS 4.0 product. The created binaries will be owned by Cloanto but will be made available for free download from the Amiga and Cloanto web sites.

Cloanto and Amiga are also in talks concerning a new version of Amiga Forever, as well as a special version of Amiga Forever for AmigaOS 4.0, which aims to provide chipset-level Classic Amiga compatibility integrated with the new generation Amiga operating system and hardware.

Yay - another OS4 application

I wonder if the "integration" uses the virtualised memory to catch reads/writes to "chip memory" so hardware-hitting apps run?

I hope they add the "smooth" paint-mode of DeluxePaint... that's the only thing I need in PPaint to let DPaint die.

Sounds good to me- of couse I'll still get ImageFX for the true-colour stuff :)

Seriously, I think there's a market for software like this- for instance, GIF anims for web developers. Good PNG support would be great for game developers.

I too hope they sell a few copies, maybe get them to work on it some more. Unfortunately, many of our fondly-remembered apps have been on pause for several years- new sales might fix that.

@jurassiccamper

That do is interesting allright. For me to be able to play Dogs of War on OS4 without fussing about with an emulator would be so sweet that it isn't even funny.

Yeah, but at least now most of us have seen OS4 running live on the new hardware. That brings alot of confidence that it's not "too long now".

I don't think they will sell many copies as :

Quote:
The created binaries will be owned by Cloanto but will be made available for free download from the Amiga and Cloanto web sites.

But they may work on it some more anyway seeing as they seem interested in the platform again:

Quote:

Whatever, now we have a free std graphics pkg that may not be the latest but still beats Paint on windoze!

Would be even better if they could bundle it with OS4.

I'm surprised so many people still seem to use it! PPaint is only an 8bit Painting program. Apart from creating GIFs /animated GIFS for the web I can't see any other use for it...
But hey, good news.

I think it is still the best thing when you need to do pixel-level stuff - I find this extremely difficult with things like The GIMP.

PPaint is an excellent app. Not only is it good for the web, you can use it to lay out GUI's or make imagery for other excellent apps like Pagestream.

PPaint also has excellent dithering routines for scaling down high colour pics to 256 and all the way down to 2 colours.

I used it when I worked on GUI's for a game and the StarGate e-mail app.

And like someone else mentioned, it beats the heck out of Microsoft Windows' Paint.
