posted by MikeB on 17-Mar-2004 0:05:54 (9999 reads)
Next to an AmigaOS4 native port of UAE 0.8.25 various other emulators have already been ported to AmigaOS4. The following two screenshots show the c64 emulator Frodo and the arcade emulator xMame.

Nice one.

Would be nice to have an Amiga-based MAME/Arcade machine.

By hte way does this means that i can take all of the MAME-roms from my PC and play them on an A1-OS4 with xMAME?? And can it run from the CD as smoothly as MAME for XP??

Have you tried with games like Killer Instinct?? How are they playing??

On my Athlon Duron 900 MHz 512 MB DDR RAM it allmost un-playerable

But i have found a N64 emu, and that runs just fine.....

Is there a N64 emu for the Amiga??

Gotta love anime backgrounds... especially those ones which show the female of the species...

Hi!

>By hte way does this means that i can take all of the MAME-roms from my PC and >play them on an A1-OS4 with xMAME?? And can it run from the CD as smoothly as >MAME for XP??

They need to be in the Mame:Roms Directory. I guess it MIGHT work if you assign
that to the CD. Not sure if it tries to write out any config files though and how
it reacts if it cannot write them (it is using the Mame: path there too).

>Have you tried with games like Killer Instinct?? How are they playing??

As this is quite recent I only tried a few games right now, classics like 1942
and galaga.

>But i have found a N64 emu, and that runs just fine.....

>Is there a N64 emu for the Amiga??

There is one for WOS, but I think it runs only few commercial games. There is
a good PSX Emulator (also WOS), though (though soundless).

i dont think u guys should start to question about speeds atm , just keep in mind that this is just the start! , or lets put it like this "there will be other cool things announced soon" :)

i have always been abit anti emu but mame is one of thoose i always loved together with c64 emus , but the more i walk around it the more i want C64!!!!! ,turbografx,n64,psx,saturn etc emus..

also to the guy who mentioned killer instinct , what a crap game :) and i tried it on a 3ghz pc a few days ago and it was dog slow , i dont think i will even bother to try it on a 240mhz ppc :) .

that said, mame has became bloatware a long time ago ;( , i remeber when a 300mhz pc was enough to play alot of games (1999?) and now it wont even play 1942 or bombjack , why? i dont know but i am sure its because of the extensive HUGE exe and db it covers , seriously i think they should consider splitting it up and optimize it (ie 197x-198x in 1 set) etc , though i doubt it will ever happen.

anyway looking 4ward to test it on an amiagone very soon :)

aaaw... why is everybody porting that outdated poor Frodo? :(
It cant handle recent C64 demos who use the diskdrive, it emulates
the 1541 very poorly. For onefilers its OK, but no recent multifile
stuff works..

Steffen, was there any takers on that VICE porting suggestion?

Good to see all the other emus though, especially Mame, as I have an
arcade cabinett :) i could use it to test games before i buy the PCBs! :)

Why Frodo ? Simple: Easy to do. There is already source-code for both OS 3.x API
and SDL-API available. Vice would be more work

And as I was never into C64 Frodo was enough for myselves..

About MAME: Yes, it surely is bloatware. The recent MAME-exe is the biggest
executable for any sort of software I *ever* saw. Okay, there are NeoMame
and CpMame, but that's only reducing things for people who are only running
NeoGeo/Capcom CP-1/CP-2 titles. And I guess asides from the memory usage even that is still bloated.

I also heard the SDL-port of Mame (xMame) would be slower than the normal Mame. Still, on an A1 the speed is okay for the games I tried :)

i dont know much about pc sowftare anymore but i have heard that VICE is the best c64 emu , all i want to play is MAYHEM :) , exellent game..

nah but i mean if frodo had been updated it would be great but if we could have vice it would be even better...

You should try more hungry games such as neogeo games (metalslug, lastblade, ...), or capcom system 2 games (street fighter alpha serie, vampire savior,...) , or even psyko games (gunbird 1&2), or psx-hardware-based games such as souledge or soulcalibur. :)

It already emulates PSX-Hardware based games ? Wow... (Can I use the PSX CDs
of said games for it ? Or what does the Emulator need for it ?)

In fact it emulates a few arcade games that were running on a psx hardware such as souledge, soulcalibur and a few others. These games have been ported to the dreamcast later. But Mame doesn't emulate a standard psx, no.

Needless to say that those psx-based games require a huge raw power : on pc, a P4 3.2GHz is required to make them run correctly IIRC.

Anyway, cps2 and neogeo games should run just fine if os4'sdl is efficient enough.

Ah, yes, I remember...

I can imagine...

BTW: It seems they started to work on PSX/Saturn Emulation, there is some stuff
there in the source-code...

@Toaks:

I use CCS for most of my C64 emulation on the PC. It is a very capable emulation, doing a very good job of the 1541 emulation and C64 itself. It also handles all the cartridges like AR IV and games. CCS is also by the same person responsible for PlaySID on the Amiga (whose name I cannot remember fully).

MAME currently (as you know) only deals with arcade machine emulation - the specific hardware components of the machines. It currently has support for Namcos System 11/12/22 boards as such can emulate games running on those boards. It does lack emulation of Namcos sound chips though, so while games like Tekken 1,2,3 are viewable, you lose all sounds for them. Also, they do need one heck of a lot of CPU power to play at any half decent speed. This is partly down to MAMEs graphics drivers too, as Pete (author of the GPU plugins for ZiNc and ePSXe) made a modified driver for MAME which ran faster than the standard ones (going from 40fps to 60 on certain tested games).

However, as stated, you cannot expect MAME to work with your PSX game CDs as it is not designed for this, nor does it emulate a PSX.

At present there is an N64 emulator for the Amiga, but its terribly slow, runs very few commercial games and lacks joypad input.

The emulator was called TrueReality - and is one of AmiDogs releases.

You can also find FPSE (and SOPE which is even older) ported there too. It is not too bad, but again even under WOS is very slow and lacks sound, and has not been worked on in a long time. Sadly the best emualtions for these are ePSXe for the PC which I do not believe is opensource.

Isn't that solved by AmigaDOS? I mean, if you do this:

Assign MAME: CD0:
Assign MAME: HD0:games/mame ADD

won't any write attempts to MAME:config-file skip the CD (since it's a write attempt to a read-only medium) and write to the hard disk? (if not, consider this a feature request )
