Announcement   Announcement : AmigaShare will soon deliver on its promise!
   posted by choochy on 4-Apr-2004 0:31:10 (2778 reads)
AmigaShare would like to announce that within the next fortnight, Phase 1 delivery of the web site will be made available to the community.

The main component of Phase 1 is a feature-rich Software Library for OS4 and compatible applications. The search engine will provide an informative listing of the details of all available applications. This will enable the user to quickly scan the library and find applications of interest.

A powerful feature of the library search engine is the ability to nominate a project if a search returns no result. The community can decide to support the idea and have the application developed. The sponsorship program is integrated with the search feature specifically for this purpose...to grow the application layer and the community!

For instance, the Software Library will allow:

Uploads:
Either Authors themselves or any interested party can upload OS4 and compatible applications. With each application that is uploaded, there will be information such as:

* Detailed description of the purpose of the application
* Its Categories
* Platform Requirements
* Screenshots
* Homepage Link and Email
* Licensing details
* Hard and soft links to downloads
* For classic Applications, OS4 Compatibility.
* Authors can make available their shareware or commercial applications through this portal, knowing that users will find it easily, understand its purpose see what users think of their work and ideas.

Downloads:
A fully-featured search facility will allow the user to quickly locate the application of choice. You can even filter things out based on your profile settings.

There will be a number of features that relate to downloads. Namely:

* Public Rating of the application, and comments
* Exclusive Reviews
* Download counters
* Integration with the Application Sponsorship Program(when Available). I.e. The ability to nominate projects if a search returns no results. Sponsored projects that are underway and that meet your search criteria will also show in the Software library listing.

Also, as proof of our commitment to keep the Amiga community informed, we will showcase the majority of features that the AmigaShare website will provide. Whilst the Software library will be the only functioning area for Phase 1 delivery, all Amigans will see just how relevant and comprehensive this website will be for their every-day Amiga use and why AmigaShare will be touted as the one-stop portal for all enthusiasts and new-comers alike.

Regards,

The AmigaShare Team

That is a verry good initiative, i suppose this will be
some kind of an "aminet" for OS4 but with more
integration and support from the programmers.

Will there also be a part where normal users can
bring in some older programmes that run on OS4?

I suppose there will be alot of testing by the
early-bird users and the pre-release.

De groetjes, Dirk.

@Dirk

Yes there will be support for uploading OS4 compatible classic applications. We will provide the user uploading the file an OS4 compatible check box. This will then be uploaded as "OS4 Compatible - unverified", we will then have one of our moderators verify that it is indeed OS4 compatable and it will then be shown as a verified OS4 compatible classic application.

We will also be making available the ability to upload OS4 compatibilty reports.

Hi Choochy

Please mate, could you elaborate a little on this scheme. I'm still a little unclear as to the purpose of this program. Is it like what DaveP had proposed a while ago?

The part of the site hes talking in this news item about would be similar to download.com, only for AmigaOS.

@Bodie_CI5

Hey,

Yes, Its really two schemes in one. Firstly an "Application Development Sponsorship Program". Secondly, this is what DaveP was proposing, a "Developer Sponsorship Program".

I joined the Developer Sponsorship Program Forum that DaveP had setup. From what I can tell, not much has progressed yet. I think most people where happy to see what AmigaShare will come up with and if it met their needs. Our plan is to meet the needs of the Amiga community, so what ever they and you want, we will supply.

I hope this answers your question. For more information please have a read at www.amigashare.com.

Thanks,

Yep, no more explanation needed. I shall drop by the website soon to check it out further.

Just a question: did you think about starting on Aminet's foundation ? I mean, you could enhance Aminet to suit the new needs: better search engine, new OS...
I'm sure Urban will agree to that...

@elwood

Yes, it has been discussed a few times between ourselves. However we just want to get the features down first. Sometime closer to the release or shortly after we may approach such people.

You know what??????

I think a translation is required for our American friends.

Fortnight is an english word that means 2 weeks.

Take Care and God Bless.

LOL... some of us already discovered what it means. Dictionary.com is your friend. For some reason, I thought that it indicated a couple of days.... it started to bug me, so I looked up the exact meaning. As it turns out, it means a period of 14 days.

Quote:
fort·night ( P ) Pronunciation Key (fôrtnt)
n.

A period of 14 days; two weeks.

[Middle English fourtenight, alteration of fourtene night, fourteen nights : Old English fowertne, fourteen; see kwetwer- in Indo-European Roots + Old English niht, night; see nokwt- in Indo-European Roots.]

Strictly speaking I suppose a fortnight is 15 days. Eg if I go on holiday for a fortnight, I leave on a Saturday and come back 2 Saturdays later, making 15 days in total.

(@Billsey) A bit like Jesus resurrecting 3 days later. You have to count the start and end days :)
