Internet News   Internet News : IBM confirms POWER5 server release details
   posted by Hammer on 4-May-2004 10:56:32 (152236 reads)
Quote:
This, claims IBM, is the most powerful 64-bit chip ever built, and is capable of running multiple OSes including AIX, Linux, Windows and i5/OS simultaneously.
...
The machines will also use IBM's "virtualisation" technology which it announced last week.
...
The chips also allow simultaneous multithreading. It is releasing a number of servers using the POWER5 including ones for small to medium sized businesses - the i5 520, which will cost $11,500 when it becomes available.
- The Inquirer.

PS; It?s interesting to see that IBM is supporting MS Windows on Power5 (so much for Microsoft free environment). I assumed $11500 is in USD. Note that; such virtualization server services would be similar to VMWARE's GSX Server.

The REAL question is: Will it be able to run Ami.... Never mind! Sorry, couldn't resist.

It cannot actually run Windows:

"Like its predecessors, the i5 line also comes with technology called Integrated xSeries Server (IXS) that tightly binds an Intel-based server that can share the main server's networking resources. With i5, though, IXS technology now supports Linux as well as Microsoft Windows, a source said."

Why resist? Resistance is futile?

Except for the fact that AmigaOS4 isn't a server OS, there's no reason why OS4 shouldn't be ported to as many PowerPC platforms as possible, including cousin Pegasos.

So let's say that 'when its done' Hyperion can make and sell a POWER5 version for $2000 Euros a copy.

You would think that with Digital's FX32! to run Windows on the Alpha processor in the past, software PC emulators for Mac (virtualPC?) and Amiga, and even things like JIT to run 68k apps on PowerPC... you would think....

Well somebody has to port UAE or modify IBM?s virtualization software (which duplicates the A1 ecosystem).

@Hammer:

For some reason, "duplicates the A1 ecosystem" just didn't sound right to me. You mean it's copying my fjord?

@general:
It's going to be interesting to see what this baby can do. IBM have some very different ideas sometimes

This weeks pet peeve:
Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.
