Software News   Software News : Aladdin 4D Source Code and Rights for Sale
posted by MikeB on 12-Aug-2004 1:21:35 (8611 reads)
Nova Design has started an eBay auction to sell Aladdin 4D source code and rights:

"The winning bidder will acquire the entire rights to Aladdin 4D. They are even welcome to the remaining stock of Amiga packages which can be shipped to them at their expense otherwise Nova Design will simply liquidate these to a discount distributor. Nova Design will turn over all rights and intellectual property pertaining to Aladdin 4D following payment."

Sigh, it is sad to see another Amiga product being lost (I doubt anyone in the Amiga market has the resources to buy this - hope I'm proved wrong). Oh well, best of luck to Kermit, I'm sure that this decision was a difficult one but one that is best for his business .

It is certainly sad to see this go, one of the last big commercial Amiga products. I wonder what will happen to ImageFX?
We should try to get the community and KMOS to donate money to open source this, though $35,000 is a lot of money!

I really can't see why you guys think this is sad?! I think it's great! Now someone can get a fresh start with a wonderful application. Insted of letting it slowly but surely fade away.

Yeh, it's a lot of money, but there HAS to be a company somewhere out there who's willing to invest in this. How big an effort do you think it would be to port it to OS4? A big part of the code should be a straight compile right?

Honestlly. Do you guys think we could get 300 ppl willing to invest in a project like this?

I'm in.

(If we pay twice as much we only need 150 :)

It's only a good thing if someone actually buys it (and develops it)..otherwise it means that development for Alladin is officially ended...kind of a shame, it had potential..but needs alot of work to be brought up to modern standards.

It is sad because it is almost certain that no-one weill buy it, or if they do taht they will port it to Mac/Linux/Windows and the Amiga version will stagnate. I don' think that anyone outside of the community would really be interested in investing in Amiga software and no-one inside it has the money.
ON the website it says that "Runs on any Amiga, or Amiga compatible system, including all models of Commodore Amiga, Quikpak Amiga, Escom Amiga, Draco, Pegasos, AmigaOne, and emulated under Amithlon, Amiga Forever and UAE" so I don't know if this means OS4 nativly, OS4 68K emulatoion or Linux UAE 68K emulation.
I should think that we could if we publicised it across the whole community including the Genesi/MorphOS lot and promise them a port. The problem is not in 8 to 9 days. I am going to right to NovaDesign and ask them what happens to the source and IP if it isn't sold. Maybe we could get some time to raise the money and make an offer.
The software sells at $99 right? So if you get 350 ppl to pledge to buy copies from you then you allreay have the money to buy the rights and if you don't get it then you can refurnd them the money. Then you have a guarenteed userbase of 350+ which you could sell an upgrade to and promise them a special discount on it.

Join with the MOS community, and then you might be able to raise the money to buy the source and the IP

Hi all !!!!!

Garry Hare, put up, or shut up!

Oh wait, we rarely hear from you anyhow.

This is a GOLDEN!!!!!!!!!!! opportunity to move forward!!

A piece of fine rendering SW going for a SONG!

Why let it go to imuc or msdross?

The amortization of this SW is 35,000 over 1,100 AmigaOnes! = US $31.82 !!!!!!

Amortize over desired micro A1 production, and it's ALMOST free!!!!!!

Garry, you say you have financing, this is CHEAP!

DON'T LET IT GO OPEN SOURCE!

AmigaOne! Pre-AOS4.0! This SW offering IS a big part of the future of all things Amiga!

With MorphOS community possibly but Genesi won't help, I emailed them and go t this back "there is _no_ Amiga market that would justify your investment in
Aladdin 4D." Oh well so much or that idea. Does aqnyone think we could get the investmet required or would I be wasting my time? I wonder what KMOS have to say to my email...

Hi all,

Okay, think about it.

I paid for a one year membership twice to the Amiga club, and didn't care if I got a T-Shirt or not.

Now, I found out, for $28.63 Canadian (US $21.64), I can get a T-Shirt printed on front AND back, with ANY Amiga inspired picture I want!!!!!

AmigaOne! Pre-AOS4.0! Another bar of gold down the toilet?????

It would probably just make sense for some party interested in buying the sources and then port it to another platform (x86) and there either try to make it a popular home rendering package or extend it to play with the big boys (maya, lightwave).

Getting back the money of such an investment on the amiga market is a pure fairy tale.

I doubt anyone from the Amiga communitry can afford to pick it up. It will probably end up going to an x86 dev company and the Amgia version will become a mere memory

How many people are using Aladdin 4D for REAL?

If there will be RealSoft 3D ported by Hyperion, we don't need two average packages...

It would be MUCH better use Cinema 4D 8.5 or LW [8] under Mac emulation
(I know that it is much more expensive and the native OS4 Mac emulator is not available at the moment [I really hope there will be FusionPPC or MacOnAmiga ported soon] but these programs are industry standards, more featured, developed faster, with guaranteed future development, and you can always switch to other platform without need to learn completly different program)

Hi all,

Okay, so maybe I'm beating a dead horse here, BUT, $35,000 devided by 5,000 microAmigaOnes is $7!!!!!

Include it on the AOS cd.

So IF, enough people are willing to pre-pay for an upgrade, THEN, produce a PPC native version.

Is it REALLY that impossible an investment for KMOS?

AmigaOne! Pre-AOS4.0! When gifts appear, grab 'em!!!!! (Hare today, gone tomorrow!)

@ Athiest

Imho Alladin 4D was never as good as some of the other packages.. Im holding out for the Realsoft port. What I am more concerned about is Image FX.

It may not be that impossible an investment for KMOS - but they are not a charity organisation. In terms of priority we need Compliant Web browsers, Word Processors - the day to day and mundane before we 3D rendering packages.

As for KMOS and their apparent silence, perhaps its because they are working on things behind the scenes. Investment bankers dont like loosing money - they wouldnt have funded KMOS if they thought for one second that they could not make a profit. The Amiga history is quite turbulant yet they see something in it. Give them time.

Funny how this topic gets turned into a KMOS attack..

Yeh, I thought about that too.. Even if there's a market for "a" 3D rendering package on the future Amigas. I doubt there is room for two.
