Good news, although the A1 is still expense, all you have to do is compare them to price of Macs to see that and Macs aren't cheap computers either. Yes, I know market of scale blah blah, but doesn't change the fact they need to keep prices as low as possible - maybe a significantly lower spec board is needed for new comers who are interested in Amiga and want to dabble but are put off by the cost, is a A1 PCI card for PC's possible?

What the Amiga hardware market could do with now or very soon is a competitor to the Amiga One. Eyetech have got a monopoly on the hardware side on things. KMOS should be chasing potential licensees and cutting that license price*, personally I'd love to see an Elbox Amiga - Elbox hardware rocks! (no, I don't work for them )

Good news though, the industrial version would probably be my preference personally.

The Amiga name, lol, that sadly has little credability left now. All this license does is keep up the high price on the A1 and destroy any chance it has of competing on price with other boards.

Ahem.. Please read what it says. "Motherboard including video controller and KMOS 'Name' licence". What makes you think that the KMOS license cost is inadequately high? What exactly do you think the license cost *is* - it doesn't say so, only what the board and video controller and license costs.

I don?t consider $333.96 AUD (£130.00) motherboard as a big issue since I recently spent $276.00 AUD K8 (CK8) board (via impulse buying). By it's cost factor alone, Eyetech?s ITX board is a 'reasonable' product.

Most of the complains seems to be targeted against CPU.

I'm not sure why people seem dissapointed with the use of 750fx (or GX). ALthough altivec is a very cool feature, the 750fx is by no means a poor performer. Benchmarks such as these:

show it to excel in many applications. Of course I am a rather biased since I'm a very happy owner of a 750fx A1XE.

With regard to the price of the CPU module, it is at least more competitively priced than many Mac CPU upgrades. They seem to sell from around $350 AUD for a g3 500mhz upgrade, It gives a reasonable guide as to what sort of cost pressures a small company such as Eyetech is up against.

G3 label could be an issue i.e. Apple?s G3 vs G4 marketing has worked. It's the interest parties? problem to counter it. Another issue is the forced bundling e.g. what if vendor A has slightly cheaper motherboard while vendor B has slightly cheaper MPU module?

Indeed .

The problem is the lack of a Vector unit (call it VMX or Altivec), not the lack of a G4 label.

If the 750VX had a vector unit for me it would be a "G4"

The vector unit should provide the required boost in apps that require brute force and that would allow us to have a system were you can do stuff in a decent time frame.

Altivec(SIMD) can only do so much i.e. certain things are not completely SIMD'ed e.g. POV-RAY. I haven?t seen Altivec rescuing Quake2, MySQL, Apache 2, GCC complier, OS kernel from its opposition MPUs.

Well I was shocked when I saw the pricing, 'til I read on that it included MB, CPU+cooler and memory!

£130 is a lot better than I ever imagined. Then I saw the price of the CPU...

Maybe I'm weird, but it's not the performance of the CPU that's bothering me, it's the friking huge price!! £170 for a 800mhz 750?! Are they taking the piss? You can get an Opteron for that price!

But then I also think the gfx chip is overspecced for the industrial version, maybe it is just me. I wonder if if that affects the price much?

hmm i must be rich as i dont think the price on the micro a1 is too high or anything, i will put my G4 into this baby as soon as i get it and put the g3 into my xe...aaaaaah

I think she is going to use my Thinkpad R40 (work computer) the fist long time

Hope she will learn to love Amiga OS (she has never tried Amiga OS before )

PS: She has known that I will buy an AmigaOne as long as she has known me!

Funny. I was just thinking that the dealers should be able to do the same with their stock to accomodate customers who want a G4 card in the uA1. Or do you think it would void the Eyetech warranty on the boards?
