hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Beta Wireless Network Driver Available
   posted by herewegoagain on 19-Sep-2004 14:02:40 (5701 reads)
A beta version of a new wireless network driver is available for download. It supports PCMCIA cards in the A1200/A600 and PCI cards on the AmigaOne.

For potential compatibility information, see Absolute Value System's directory of wireless chipsets. If a card's chipset is listed there as Orinoco, Agere or Prism (except the SSF version) and its bus type is PCMCIA or PCI, it is likely to work. If the card is listed there but doesn't match these requirements, it will definitely not work.

This should be good news for anyone wanting to use a wireless card on their AmigaOne.

Great work!

How about a report from the first person to try it?

This is something I will be considering when I get a MicroA1, which I'm planning to do later this year, there's not a lot of point making my AmigaOne XE wireless as it never moves around, but a MicroA1 is a lot smaller and is more likely to move around to shows, events etc, where wireless could be an advantage.

Thanks for creating the driver, I will download whatever is the latest version when I am in a position to use it.

I can confirm that this driver works well. Just tested it with some OEM Prism 2 cards that we have and it talks to the broadband router fine. No compatibility issues - worked first time.

Good work Neil!

Hello All

Good news about this wireless driver about time we had one!

Only problem is that its not for 1200 PCI busboards either Mediator or G-Rex. I guess ill have to wait for Elbox to pull there finger out and make one!!

Could be in for a looong wait!

@amigakit

That's great. What system config did you try it on (A1200/A600 or A1)?

OK, looks like time to give Suzanne that MB change and cut a slot in the side. I have a ZoomAir card here just gagging to be tested.

The driver and our wireless cards were tested on an A1200 REV 2B

Will test an A600 REV 1.5 next.

All tests are with AMITCP3 and our forthcoming EasyNet software.

will you be or are you selling these cards amigakit? and if you are/will be what price range are we looking at?

I dont have a wireless network here yet mainly because my network is mainly amiga's and my powerbooks that either dont have drivers for wireless cards or the cards are hard to come by...

Maybe, too early to say ATM. Depends if the cards test thoroughly on a range of Amigas and offer good performance.

If they are sold I expect the price to be low- I imagine around £29- still early days.

I'm aware that Amiga owners don't want to go hunting around for the right card. Ive just tried to put another brand of wireless card in the A1200 now and it wont fit because the notch on the PCMCIA card is raised- probably to prevent it being used with PCMCIA type 2 computers.

@shoe

There are some compatible D-Link cards. In fact, I'm using a D-Link DWL-520 myself (only certain revisions of this model are Prism II though).

But i wonder : what speed standards are supported by the driver ?
108 Mb/s ?, 54 ? 22 ? 11 ?
