hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : New AmigaOne firmware available
posted by EntilZha on 6-Oct-2004 10:25:20 (20312 reads)
Leuwen, Belgium - October 6th 2004.

In preparation for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, Hyperion Entertainment is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the much improved U-Boot 1.1.1 for AmigaOne SE and XE motherboards.

New features include:

* Support for multiple graphics cards. At this time the last graphics card (usually the AGP card) is used for primary display. Later versions will include an option to choose.
* Support for booting off a Silicon Image 0680 IDE controller. This feature has to be selected manually at the moment, by entering setenv ide sii from the U-Boot shell.
* New CPU support: IBM PowerPC 750GX is now fully supported.
* A problem has been fixed that made the U-Boot environment settings unavailable when rebooting from Linux.
* Support for LBA48 IDE Drivers, i.e. you can now boot off drives that are bigger than 160 GB.
* Support for the new Second-Level Bootloader (that can boot Linux besides AmigaOS), to be distributed with the upcoming AmigaOS 4 update.
* Numerous bug fixes and improvements.

The new U-Boot will be required for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, to be released shortly to registered AmigaOS 4.0 pre-Release owners.

The download is available in our Downloads section.

Bug in the old SLB. It's fixed in the new one, coming with the update.
Please be a little more patient.

Here is some info on "El Torito" standard:
The PCs won't boot directly from a CD-ROM, so part of the CD should be written/mounted as a floppy disk image.

Yes it was five 0 not six! Anyway it works both for me.

@RWO
You don't have started autoboot.
write "bootm"

Update: and as Dave said it seem you are booting from hd (0:0) Boot from you cd (see what device is under uboot) and if it doens't start write bootm after you got the cursor again.

You are trying to boot from hard disk you need to boot from cd. When you go into uboot it shows the list of devices. The number to put in is the one that corresponds to the cd.

only 5 zeros... 500000 is correct.

i used it exactly like this
diskboot 500000 2:0 (second ide connector)
bootm

and it worked.

OK I have a CD burner and a floppy drive (MS type) on my A1 and no Linux and none of the above on my MS box.

Do a search for Floppy Image and use that to make the floppy disk. You will have to rename the image on the PC from XXXXX.image to XXXXX.img first.

Silly question:
Why the bootm? I made the update without it and it worked?! I think I still don't understand UBOOT fully...

Alex.

Hi! I just saw this recently and i thought "WOW!", so i just downloaded the ISO-CD file and contacted my friend Morten, whom will be back from vacation on Monday 11th of October. I do not dare to take care of this UBoot-update myself, as one minor mistake could damage the motherboard by some way..

And how knows? By this weekend, we might also be able to download the OS4-Beta Update (for registered Pre-OS4 owners like me). This is just fantastic!!!!

Excellent work, Hyperion! Perfect! It's getting better and better all the time!

God, this is damn fun!

Yes, I get the same. There also seems to be an extra reboot of U-Boot (the IDE devices are scanned again). Is this correct?

@ ikir

It's a standard for bootloaders on CD's

Use diskboot, not boota to launch the updater.

I personally would suggest writing it to a floppy disk (in Linux) via the "dd" command, just use "fdcboot" to flash it... that's IMHO the easiest way... if you have a floppy, that is...

It's an ISO image, so don't just burn it as a file. I _think_ MakeCD accepts ISO images.

If not, you can always use the floppy updater. If in doubt, you can even write the floppy updater to an empty disk partition and launch it like a Linux kernel

They haven't fixed the "uboot eats up the first typed character after a ctrl+alt+alt reboot" though ;)

To be honest, I never knew that this bug existed at all... I never encountered it.

I think I've managed to type in "oota" instead of "boota" due to this error like 50 times since I got 4.0 :)

You can now boot both Linux and AmigaOS throught boota, so you can make it a boot command and never have to type it again

@ bennymee

Note that the updater has to be booted with "diskboot", not boota...
