I cross-compile on Linux. You're right - the lack of sh-compatible shell on OS4.0 means configure scripts cannot be used, and so building on OS4.0 would be too much of a headache.

Configuring is usually (depending on the version of autoconf used to generate the configure script) just a simple matter of doing something like:

./configure --host=ppc-amigaos --build=i686-linux

Config scripts generated with earlier versions of autoconf tend to need to be told explicitly what compiler to use (and have poorer support for cross-compiling, so additional hacking may be required):

CC=ppc-amigaos-gcc ./configure --host=ppc-amigaos --build=i686-linux

Of course, other config options will usually be necessary too. And the software you're compiling will probably require libraries - so you need OS4.0 builds of those installed in your cross-compiler environment.

Then it's just a matter of fixing the stuff that's broken or doesn't work on OS4.0 - which may be easy or may be difficult.

Quazatron was the Paradroid equivalent for the Spectrum (it was based on the C64 Paradroid). It was identical to Paradroid except that it used a 3d-overhead view. I've played Paradroid 90 on the Amiga and the gameplay was never as good as Quazatron in my opinion. The 3d-esque approach in Quazatron made the game much more fun as you could damage yourself by falling off ledges, and similarly could destroy enemies by pushing them off (assuming you were good enough). What let the speccy version down was the Speccy itself (low res graphics and dire colour pallette).

What's cool is that someone has actually developed an online Flash version of Quazatron, so you can get in idea of what it ws like for yourself (subject to available flash v6 enabled computer):

I was about to mention Quazatron!
I played that for hours and hours - I think it was given away free on a Your Sinclair coverdisk.
I always wondered if it was the same as Paradroid.

Yeah, I played Quazatron alot more than was healthy. Just absolutely loved the game. When I saw the Amiga Paradroid 90 game a few years later I was quite keen to play it. However, just didn't get the same feeling from the game with the 2d overhead view. That Marble Madness style approach of Quazatron really did add to the game enormously.

Hey Richard, if you happen to find yourself at a loose end at some point, any chance of getting around to a Quazatron-like conversion of FreeDroid? U could even call it
3-D-roid
