Software News   Software News : LBreakout 2 SDL released.
posted by Toaks on 21-Oct-2004 15:37:37 (3025 reads)
Yet Another top notch SDL/GPL game has been released for our beloved Os4.

This is a straight port, based on our libSDL port. It features selectable themes, addon support (includes the original lbreakout level set), and a built-in editor.

This port does not support network play. For some reason it didn't work, and I didn't have the time to look at it. Other than that it should be fairly complete.

Configuration and custom files are stored in PROGDIR:config. If you make your own levelset, this is where they will pop up.

This port was done by Hans Joerg Frieden and its downloadable from Os4depot: http://os4depot.net/share/game/action/lbreakout2.lha

I just have, and I'm very impressed. It's a very polished game with nice graphics, lots of features and good gameplay.

I'm always amazed by the quality of open source software including games.

Thanks very much Hans-Joerg

I learnt a new word as well - 'maluses' (the opposite of bonuses I assume).

Very nice,

I am enjoying these SDL games but I have a question. Why do all these wonderful SDL games take my WHOLE processor load. UAE uses less. Running 5 copys of AMP uses less processor.

I assume it's an SDL thing, but does anyone expect that we'll see more efficient SDL apps? This is an Amiga after all.

FuZion.

Great game.

Word of warning though

When playing fullscreen, If you quit you are left at just a black screen & a curser !!

Yes, I discovered that as well, but SysInspector can be used to close the screen nicely.

Hmmm... I enjoyed the game, I just wanted to point out a 'bug' in the
SDL implementation. When you move the mousepointer outside of the screen,
you loose control over the pad. And it kind of happens a lot if you get excited. I noticed the same thing with scumVM. Oh yes, and this onnly applies
to the window modes i guess.
Would be nice if you had to press some hotkey or something to activate
the mouse outside of the game window.

Because they try to run as fast as they can. For lbreakout you can limit the frame rate to 200, 100 or 50 FPS to make it use less CPU.

Uh, pardon me? You mean to say it's only Amiga if it doesn't use the full potential of the system

No, honestly, the ball is moving continously, that means that the game doesn't wait for user input or anything. It just rolls on. You can, as I said, limit frame rate and limit the amount of CPU percentage it eats.

It should exit cleanly at least 80% of the time. Problem is that there is a bug in the threading that can enter a deadlock, so threads will wait until eternity. Believe it or not, lbreakout is a multi-threaded application

The current SDL doesn't limit the mouse cursor into the window. Actually, Intuition V51 *can* do that (capture the mouse inside a window) but it just hasn't made it into SDL yet.

EDIT: You can play in fullscreen to prevent this

I have an implementation of this feature for SDL just about ready.

Cheers,

i have tried the game now and it was pretty decent indeed but nowhere near as polished as Babeanoid .

anyway was a few drawbacks in Lbreakout2, NO music! ... and once u die the pointer pops up for a few seconds (made it horrible in window mode imho)

as for playing on its own screen it ruled but i miss the music and i wonder if it should be music in it at all...

the fps counter was funny...900 fps and i guess its correct even as it was damn fluid!

great game but i'd rather have a port of the amiga classic Babeanoid

See the OpenWindowTagList autodocs, attributes WA_GrabFocus and WA_MouseLimits. Note that the focus needs to be "renewed" after some tim, i.e. the prgoram using it must regularily call SetWindowAttrs and reset the focus. This prevents crashed or hung programs from hogging the mouse pointer.
