Software News   Software News : After SATA, OS4 gets SMART
   posted by sg2 on 1-Nov-2004 23:38:32 (4336 reads)
Hello, Subject says it all, OS4 gets SMART (harddisk health monitoring).
See for yourself at http://s.guillard.free.fr/OS4/smartmontools.jpg.

Nota bene :
- this is a port from Linux SmartMonTools.
- it is unpolished yet : see last line on grab ;)
- it requires version 51.30 of the OS4 IDE drivers (a1ide or sii0680ide or sii3112ide), which are not available yet
().

Kind regards,
--
Stéphane Guillard

Nice! is this (or rather, the more polished version of it ) going to become part of the OS, or is that impossible because of licensing issues? (ie parts of AmigaOS would have to become GPL'd)

@CodeSmith

It would be better if the SMART stuff was added to MediaToolbox (but, yes, it would probably need to be reimplemented from scratch to get around the GPL)

If I'm not mistaking, this feature was introduced in Windows2000.
Damn ! We are catching up !

I was under the impression that SMART was something implemented at BIOS level only. I didn't know you could use it within the OS.

SMART IOCTL already exist in Windows NT4.0 SP6a i.e. SP6a contains a fix for the buggy SMART IOCTL call.

For Windows 95 OSR2's SMART support refer to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=265854

smartmontools are very good, using the smartd here on sun servers - just for reporting bad hdds, BEFORE they really fail.

THO : yesterday i just compiled smartmontools on a sun ultra and started smartctl -a /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 and ... the drive crashed :-/

hope the miggy version doesn´ t do such things
