Software News   Software News : ASp Version 0.85 released!
   posted by Laser on 3-Jan-2005 23:15:53 (4329 reads)
A new version of ASp, the Amiga Spectrum Emulator, is available from the author's website.

This version allows machines without an MMU to access the full 128K emulation.

ASp should work with OS3.x, OS4, UAE and MorphOS.

As an ex-spectrum fanatic I also think this is great news, however I haven't yet
got it to work under my installation of OS4. But then other people have things working
that I don't - so perhaps I just need to clear out my OS4 directory and reinstall it!

Can you describe what goes wrong? I may be able to give you a hint what the problem could be.

You could also try using tooltypes to force various things off, like:

AUDIOMODE=NONE
FORCENOMMU
JOYPORTACCESS=STICK

These all sound like good hints. It compains unable to open joystick device ( this is memory Im not actually on my AOS4 machine at the moment ) and then opens a blank screen on which nothing happens. The GUI is still responsive on workbench and allows me to reset ( does nothing really ) or quit or load tapes. Ill retry with what you specified in tooltypes in a min!

OK exactly what happens

Double click on icon ( Ive got a bug here btw its not your problem ) icon gets deleted and Grim Reaper pops up
press Ignore Errors, yellow guru warning pops up,

GUI opens.

Insert Ranarama tape. Click on load.

Pop up box appears!
Unable to allocate joystick resource OH NO
click ok

Blank black screen.

uA1c OS4 update 2

Ill try it on the OS4 beta drive tomorrow.

On the old version I had to change the joystick setting to:-

lowlevel.lib stick

and it works:)

Dammit, seems the icon tooltype bug stopped it reading the stick setting. Works
now.

Ahhhhh! :D

@DaveP

Ahh...

I'm not sure which joystick access systems are supported by OS4. It appears the default ASp setting isn't one of them. I'll try to change the default in the next release.

Thanks...

@Laser

No joystick support is available in OS4 yet. Your default ideally needs to be one of the lowlevel.library options, then it will use AmigaInput when that is finished.

Nice work btw.

None at all? So anyone using ASp (all three of you!) under OS4 is having to put up with playing games using a keyboard?

As a point of interest, how well does the AmigaOne handle multiple simultaneous keypresses? The A1200 is notoriously bad at it, which is not good when trying to play Elite!

I'm having nothing but joy with ASp on OS4 so far. My first test, & ALWAYS my first, is Cybernoid. The music is swish. The GFX are killa & it plays darn well too.

Multiple keypresses so far are fine. Playing Cybernoid & whacking the space bar to shoot my machine gun sometimes lets off missiles & the like as if I'd been holding down the space bar. I'm yet to do more tests on different games.

What else? Chase HQ. Only a quick go, but hearing "Lech go mifter driver!" in good classic speccy-digitised-fuzz-o-sample-vision brung a little tear. I even got the Speccy version of Prince of Persia to work. I never got it working on previous versions of ASp for some reason. In fact, for those that haven't played it on the Speccy, give it a go, it's pretty close to the Amiga you know.

FuZion.

The Commodore's A1200s had a hardware bug in the keyboard chip which made several keypresses at once undetectable. The Escom's A1200s had this fixed. For the AmigaOne I don't know.

I always used keys on the Speccy anyway.
