Software News   Software News : Remote Desktop client compatible with OS4 released
posted by HammerD on 10-Jan-2005 14:19:35 (6355 reads)
I am happy to announce the release of an updated Remote Desktop client that works with OS4 and OS 3.9. Remote desktop (using the rdp protocol) allows an Amiga computer to connect, via full screen or a window, to a Windows XP Pro computer or Windows server for remote control of that system. Similar in concept to VNC.

You may download the client from the website:

Remote Desktop Support Site

Thanks to everyone who helped with this port and of course the main programmer Martin Blom.

Any chance I can try your version ?

for now it does not compile as I've prefered to rework many things and to try to stick the more possible to the main tree (hoping to have it officially integrated one day) and also I'm not at home all weeks long (for professional reasons) so had to install and play (for the first time) around to see why on earth OS3.9 does not work as expected with WinUAE... Many nights like or even and "dooh I don't have the AmiSSL SDK, must wait tomorrow..." etc.

Also I've done an amiga_win.c (to get to the x_win.c) and do some cut'n'paste from the Martin's amiga.c for old functions and write or modifications of new ones.

@adrianebrown

Did not go too far in the RDP protocol, but it seems that XP Home is using a subset of the RDP protocole which is preventing rdesktop to connect to it. I think this is some sort of question you should ask to the original programmers go to their site or even better to the sourceforge page associated where you'll find mailling-lists.

Edit: corrected a typo

Thanks!

XP Home does not support Remote Desktop incoming connections. One of the features of Windows XP "Professional"...

Anyway, you can use XP Home to connect to other Windows XP PRO or Server machines using the Remote Desktop Connection client - just download it from Microsoft.

Of course Remote Desktop is only useful for connecting to Windows machines... an Amiga side Server would be cool, though :)

Great job. A very useful piece software. Too bad that I have Windows XP Home installed on my Laptop. Now I see that I should have plunked more $$$ for PRO

A question. If you were to use IE, or any other web browser (like in all the pictures posted), would it be possible to download files and save them through your network onto the Amiga, instead of locally on the PC? If yes, then I guess this would pretty much solve (well, kind of) the problem with the lack of a good web browser for AOS.

Thanks :) And yes you can do that if you have SAMBA installed on your Amiga.

How about something similar that connects to Mac OS X machines. My wife and I will never own Windows and I (as the Amiga user) would love to connect to her iMac to use occasionally.

Search Google for VNC, and you should find just what you are looking for. It's an open source "remote desktop" type application, that is fully cross-platform. There are clients for Macs, Windows, Linux, Amiga, etc. For the Amiga, you would need to get AmiVNC. Don't remember the link right now, but it should show up in other threads here from a search or in a Google search.

But, VNC is it's own protocol. It is not compatible with "Remote Desktop"/"Terminal Server" from Microsoft, and vice-versa. But it makes a nice compliment to go with Remote Desktop. I have both on my PCs at home, as I use VNC to connect to my Linux server and Remote Desktop through VPN to my work PC or sometimes to my kids' PC in the other room.

That's just awesome. Now when I get an OS4 machine I can use it at the office also
to manage the win servers. The win geeks won't know what hit them.

Yes, you can do exactly that. One of the reasons why Remote Desktop exists :) I do that right now and it works nicely. As long as you have a reasonable internet connection it is quite fast.

Now I can sell my PC monitors and buy a new A1

Really good job HammerD... Why don't you cooperae with abalaban for a better work on this stuff? Keep up the good work...

Hi HammerD,

Thanks a lot for the help. I tried it and works like a charm even with my 56K dialup! I could log in to our school's terminal server and do stuff!

I couldn't believe it was so easy to use.

Thanks, Thanks, and more thanks,
Firbodi

Glad it works for you :) I'd also love to get a server for amiga working, but unfortunately that will probably cost alot more than the client did. So it will have to wait for now.

But I am glad you find the Remote Desktop client useful.

Cool. Now I can use my A1 with OS4 for writing user manuals, status reports (they have macros in them) and production documentation etc while coding on the Linux machine. They're sitting next to each other in my office at work anyway

(rdesktop under Linux is a bit annoying, since it grabs the keyboard, so if I alt-tab into it, I need click myself out of it using the mouse... I presume it's the same way here, but I don't need more than the one application on OS4 to defend me having it there)

Very nice. Works great with my PC at home.

Just have to keep my wife and son away from that PC ....

Great work.

But i have a strange problem.
Yesterday i tried it and it worked flawless, but today the client quits with the massage that it can't open amiSSL.
AmiSSL is installed as "version" shows it and amissl itself works.

Anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

It works great. I showed it to a colleague of mine yesterday (we both use Linux + RDesktop at work) and he was migtily impressed. He's using RDesktop under KDE/X on a 650 P3, and even 8 bit is slow for him. Seeing RDesktop in fullscreen and me flicking back and forth between IBrowse and IE with left-windows+m had him saying "wow"

Too bad my SE is crashing all the time now (I suspect it's getting a bit hot, and it IS overclocked...). It'll be my main computer at home if it just stop crashing. The dual P2 will become a dedicated server (very few workstation apps make use of the second CPU...)
