News   News : Open Source IBM Object Rexx is born
   posted by jd997uk on 9-Feb-2005 13:50:01 (2517 reads)
The Inquirer has a story regarding the first beta version published since going open source.

Relevance here? Well the licensing by C= of REXX is mentioned, as is the Amiga's usage of AREXX ports.

As a footnote, click on the link to find how inexpensive some of these implementations were

@ Orgin

No, this story by the Inquirer about the first available beta being released is new.

The story you are probably referring to is: IBM release the code for object REXX

I do like (A)REXX.

Python is nice there is no doubt (I cannot be so kind about PEARL), but nothing beats (A)REXX for ease of use.

IBMs ObjectREXX is to my mind a bit of an abortion. Normal everyday REXX is there, you need never dip into OOPs, which is it saving grace, but the OOPs part is just not nice at all.

well .. Perl is a fast language. When I say fast I mean the time it takes for you as a coder to get stuff working the way you want. Not fast as in fast :) .. besided that I have to agree with you. It's a mess.

A little off topic - just found it:
They have mentioned the latest os4 update in the Inquirer: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20417

Hi everyone!!!

This is HUGE GINORMOUS news!!!

We could get not ONE, but THREE different Arexx's AND native OS4.0 PPC compiles!!!!

I hope someone's available to work on this. A bounty is in order, too, I'd guess.

Since access is available to the source code, could an Arexx compiler be made?

Wasn't Arexx not distributed with AOS3.0, 3.1, 3.5 and 3.9 due to non-payment of license fees? Now it's FREE!

AmigaOne! AOS4.0! Doesn't it seem to just keep getting better everyday, or what???
