Hey Toaks!

Good article! For newbies this is really good to have!

Btw regarding SLB.. I got the prerelease update 1 CD with
my µA1 and I got two SLB's in the L:, SLB_NOSFS & SLB_NOLinux.
These are the only ones I have! Don't know if these are the exact
names of the files as I'm not at home writing this.
This isn't exactly what you wrote. Could this please be added
to the article?

Btw if I would like to have multi Linux & AmigaOS SFS booting
this is not possible?
Why either no SFS or no Linux? Why not SLB_Multi & SLB_Amiga?

its to do with GPL vs non GPL I think... So if you dont have the first OS4 release CD then no you cant have a multiboot setup with SFS and linux I guess..

samwel:

to quote myself: 1.2. If You want your drive to be mixed with various file systems (e.g., Linux/MOL and OS4) and for boot partition FFS then use the SLB that supports all modes (it's on the pre-release CD (slb_v2 1.8b), the one on later CDs will not work)

see the last line especially but read it all.

anyway "diskboot" is an option if you must run linux + sfs.

Another question

You say Mask: 7FFFFFFE
I say why not 7FFFFFFF?
Why does it HAVE TO be the former?

As long as your boot partition is not SFS, you don't need to use the "nolinux" slb.

As soon as you have booted, the "real" SFS from your SYS:Kickstart is loaded and used instead of the code in the slb.

Best regards,

Niels

nbache:indeed , and if you read the walkthrough thats what exactly it says, i quoted only the relative stuff to his question.

edit: also, i would like to say to everyone that sfs performs well on sys: and its recomended (i do anyway) to use SFS on that but do backups and keep ibrowse cache on a temp: partition or something or else you will get in trouble (most likely anyway)....

@hnl_dk

Thanks for the link, I'm downloading the binary right now.
It better be good... 15MB!!!

And as long as there's sources, there's a future

Alex

From your article:
Quote:
This program formerly known as HDToolbox in earlier AmigaOS versions has gone through a big overhaul.

Belive me, this is quite wrong. Code-wise MTB has nothing to do with any HDToolbox'es ever made. "Big overhaul" in the sense that MTB was written from scratch!

Ok, I tried FLite.

The actual executable is rather huge at 5.5MB (newlib anyone?), but it works.

It needs a lot of work as the voice is a bit creepy and harder to understand than narrator, although that may be because I'm not used to it, and it doesn't distinguish verbs from nouns like wind as in rewind or lead as in leader, and has some timing issues.

But unlike narrator.device, the source code is available and doesn't depend on 68k emulation, so it might have a bright future if nothing better comes along.

I couldn't find the narrator.device on the AF6 CD.

I guess I shouldn't have gotten rid of my A500 in 1993 when I upgraded to an A4000. Who knew?

I guess the big problem with newlib is the lack of documentation at the moment (I guess You betatesters have some documentation)... as the source code of clib2 is on the net, are we able to follow what is included...
It would be nice with some information about what parts of newlib that has been ported to OS4.

About FLite, is it possible to use different voices and other nice things, but I am not sure what Nicolas has included into the build (have not had the time to test it yet)... for more information about FLite, have a look at http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/flite/

@TJH

You can find both, narrator.device and SPEAK-Handler, in LouiSe´s dev hardfile.

If someone (like myself) already has both Linux and OS4 installed on separate hard drives will this work? Or should I just get used to interruping the boot sequence and typing "diskboot"?

@emeck
The hardfile is not legal (I don't think that LouiSe has bought a licens for every copy of AmigaOS)

Thanks for the info.

So, any legal source? I can't find them either in Amiga4Ever CD.
