Software News   Software News : Muli3D - a software rendering library
   posted by Mr_Capehill on 4-Mar-2005 9:04:10 (3783 reads)
Stephan Reiter's Muli3D project has been ported to AmigaOS 4. Download the source code and demos from OS4Depot.net or Aminet.

Here is the official home page: http://muli3d.sourceforge.net/

"Overview

Muli3D is a platform-independent software rendering library, which implements features of current-generation graphics cards. Clean code and functionality, which exceeds features of current hardware in specific areas, make Muli3D well suited for prototyping and research of new effects.

The library

Muli3D is written in C/C++. The SDK, which is available for download, comes with documented source-code, an application framework and several samples which present different aspects of Muli3D.
This library is released as free software under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License."

Muli3D should be considered a library for research and education...

Performance is not as important as clear code in this project.

Hmm... So basically, it's probably not ideally suited to games - but would probably be a good basis for a (cross-platform) 3D rendering package?

This looks VERY interresting, one of the most interresting os4 releases so far in my eyes. Must check it out at once! Thanks!

Maybe this could be used to create a software renderer for Warp3D (unless one already is in the works)? That would be a nice addition, especially since it could help figuring out if something doesn't work due to hardware limitations or bugs in the user code...

edit: I first had to fix my W3D code for FPSE to work with the Voodoo3 as I just had the BVision when I wrote it, and I then had to fix it to work on the Radeon 7000 when I got one because I got reports it didn't work on the Radeon... Something, anything, which would be picky but still support all those fancy effects would be a great help making sure the code is written correctly...

Nice effects indeed, but the speed is quite slow as stated. Still a very nice release!

@amigamania:

That's true. Then again, the performance isn't lightning fast on P4 either:

Maybe it could be optimized a bit. Perhaps someone with G4 would be interested to write Matrix/Vector stuff for Altivec.

@ Toaks:

LOL!

Yes, I guess lha would be simplier...but bzip2 packs tighter, right?

I forgot also to "clean" the directory, so object files are floating around...sorry!!!

About those things coming from my head...well...don't open boxes, they are bad for your health!

@Toaks

Why not be a bit more diplomatic?

Why not use *.lha.bz2 instead of *.tar.bz2 / *.lha
