Hardware News   Hardware News : PowerPC970MP application note slips out
   posted by Eric_S on 16-Mar-2005 7:40:00 (2879 reads)
For those not in the know, the 970MP is a (not yet released) dualcore PPC chip, which is to have 1MB of L2 cache per CPU-core.

Link to IBM.com's application note

* [Edit] Well it used to be anyway, it's been taken down now and the page that it's on has been restricted. [/Edit] *

Application Note
The dual 64-bit core PowerPC970MP™ (970MP) is the next evolutionary step in the PowerPC 970 family of microprocessors. The higher frequency grade versions of the 970MP consume higher amounts of power than earlier IBM microprocessors do, and that can cause temperature issues. Each 970MP processor core contains a thermal diode used to monitor its operating temperature. The thermal diode must be monitored to ensure that the maximum operating temperature of the 970MP is not exceeded. These thermal diodes used by the microprocessors are unique to the PowerPC architecture and cannot be ‘read’ using standard thermal diode monitoring chips. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the diode and outline the struc-ture of a thermal diode monitoring circuit used to monitor the temperature of the microprocessor’s cores.

sounds as though I had better do an evaluation of the wall=outlet and circuit breakers
{possibly the smoke alarm}
before I decide to purchase one of these babys

Could use one or two in my AmigaOne. (wish)

Note, One duel core chip(MP) is FASTER than two seperate 970FX chips.
Clock speed is rumoured to be 3GHz too.

Cheers,
Tim

Hmph - it doesn't actually state what temperature it can get up to, although it mentions 30C as the lower point

Thanx elwood, I was actually able to personally attend one of the retirements of said aircraft
back in my young and dumb days

actually it was exactly Mar 23 1990 now that I found this

From: 192.168.0.02 ..Pederburgh .. Iceni

SR71'S were based at RAF Mildenhall here in UK

RAF Alconbury ( Which is just down the road from my town) being a reconaissence base regularly "entertained" SR71's. i clearly remember sonic booms from them in the late sixties.. Until the governments banned > Mach1 overland.

Beautiful aircraft.. Even if it did piss fuel all over the shop till it got warmed up !!

RAF Wittering is the closest UK Airbase to Peterborough and it has been granted "Freedom of the City" of Peterborough..

Its also No.1 squadron.. Home of the Harrier

Still waiting to see one at Fairford Air Tatoo. They had the rarer and more expensive B2 there so why not the Blackbird?

well , I've researched this a tiny bit, and the only thing that I've uncoverd is;
The tools and dies and whatnots to make/repair blackbird were purposely destroyed
Whereas the B2 is still able to be built/repaired

I liken it to My dead Amiga3000, they probably cant/wont/make A3K anymore, so why should someone take the risk of traveling with a functional, limited in quantities, unit

or some such similar analogy

Mods, now that IBM has blocked access to, or entirely deleted the documents in question, could one of you please remove the links that tempt? Thank you.
