Software News   Software News : 3 scene demos ported to OS4
posted by jahc on 1-Apr-2005 12:11:24 (5125 reads)
Three Amiga scene demos released within 3 days on OS4depot.net, and still more to come soon. Varthall/Up Rough, you're a demo-porting maniac!

Universe's Zero was good, but us demo fans wanted more.. and finally more have arrived.

Hook up your sound cards to your stereos (if you havent already), because the soundtracks in these demos are great.

Miracle
Dose2
Chrysler

OMFG.

This is what i waited for. Demos for or compiled for os4.
It was some years ago i checked demos for classic amiga.
I wondered why dont people do demos for os4 on parties.
And now they come, at least compiled to work on os4.

Thanks

I was fed up with the lack of new native demos for Os4 after so many months after the release of Zero by Universe, so I decided to try to port something. It's true, I've actually become quite obsessed with them :)
It was nice to discover how fast and easy is to port demos thanks to SDL. I wonder if and
when we'll get GL support in SDL... then §I believe we'll see some truly rocking stuff.

Let we see if I'll manage to find some demos that haven't yet been ported on Pegasos

I d/l'd Chrysler and Dose2 last night.
Chrysler is impressive (runs in a WB window though !),
and Dose2 is hilarious ! I was so amused I laughed until I stopped.
I'll look at the new 'un tonight.

keep up the good work !
any chance of porting some 68k greats ? yeah, more work, I know !

@All

Snapshots of Dose 2 are welcome on os4depot. If you can make one or two then please upload them.

It crashed everytime I tried to run it in fullscreen mode, so I
compiled it to run in window mode only. At first I thought it
was a common SDL bug (I remember an emu crashing that way too,
I think it was xmame), then I found out that the other demos
work. I think I'll take a look at this problem with the help
of the original author.

Me too! But rest assured that most of us Italians aren't like him
(well, maybe with spoken English we have indeed some difficulties...)

Yes, maybe there could be some Amiga demos written all in C that
don't require WarpUp, but still they would require more work.

@Varthall:

Maybe you should have a look at porting "Yellow Rose of Texas" by Fit and Bandwagon? A very impressive 4k, winner at Assembly 2003...

It requires OpenGL. We'll have to wait for the MiniGL and SDL GL library ports before we could port these type of demos.

That would be incorrect. I have seen the MOS port of Yellow Rose loooong time ago.

Hmm, so maybe the demo has routines for sw rendering (but I doubt), or maybe there's a sw rendering mode in the SDL's OpenGL wrapper. Or maybe I'm completely missing the point I will take a look at the sources tonight.

MiniGL is not compatible with SDL. What we need to wait for is MesaGL.
