I would like to buy it but the fact that IB won't go PPC makes me think again...

Anyway, thanks IOspirit.

@elwood

This comes from the faq at www.ibrowse-dev.net :

--

What about the future, will IBrowse be going PPC only ?

No, as long as there is a market for 68k versions, IBrowse will continue to be released in
a 68k format. However, from IBrowse 3.0 onwards, a PPC native version will be available.

@Dirk-B

Yes but these two sentences seem contrary to me. Does it mean that both 2.x and 3.0 are being developed?

@elwood

Yes, 2.4 is plugin and minor fixes. 3.0 is PPC, CSS and more...

@elwood

As I understand it from following discussions on the IBrowse ML for the last several years:

Right now 2.4 and 3.0 are being worked on concurrently, but essentially only because of some nasty nagging issues that came up a while back that needed to be fixed in 2.3. Once they are done with 2.4 (and presuming there aren't any more nagging issues that might need a 2.5), it's on to 3.0+ only for development. Nice thing is that once 2.4 is finished development should go 100% towards 3.0 and we should see the new version fairly soon after that (not like the current length of time that is). What is meant by that FAQ entry is that 3.0+ will have two versions (or possibly more), one for 68K and one for PPC. Not that the 2.x versions will still be getting updated for 68K.

As it is, IB 2.3 runs quite fast and very stable on my A1, and that is even without the JIT 68K emulation! Only the OS4 beta testers have that right now, as it hasn't been released for the Earlybird owners yet. Speed wise it will be even better once that is out, until we get a PPC version of IBrowse.

Yes that's correct, and I can tell you it runs very fast and stable with JIT enabled Without doubt IBrowse 2.3 is THE most used program on my A1, must be running 12 hours plus a day here, and I can hardly remember the last time I got a Grim Reaper

Ok so the FAQ needs to be updated
Thanks, I'll buy IB now for sure.

I dont suppose the IBrowse team can comment on progress on v2.4 and v3.0? 3.0 is badly needed.

@jach

I believe they already have?!
If I remember correctly 2.4 OEM will be delivered with OS4 and 3.0 will be here
8-10 months time (end of the year I think it was).

But if they release 2.4 before OS4 final I don't know. That's maybe upto Stefan
and his team to decide. But guessing a little I bet 2.4 will be released some time
this summer..

Wow, $72 USD. Hmm. Gotta say, IBrowse is much better than AWeb right now, but at that price I REALLY hope the AWeb team ports KHTML. I'll have to buy this version, but at those prices this will be my LAST purchase of IB.

Sigh, one $72 license key bought. Nice, considering I could buy opera for a half dozen platforms for a bit over half that price. Last IB purchase from me as already stated...I hope at some point a browser that cares about the platform is done. I don't begrudge a profit, but that amount of $ by comparison is just unreal, moreso when the 'OE' version we get with OS4 final is evidently going to be 'restricted'

Buy 1000 licences and you'll see the price drop.
I mean, you know that there is more Opera users than IB users, right?

Sure, but you know Opera SMOKES IB out of the water for half the price, right?

Seriously...this is going to be an ongoing problem. When you offer FAR less than free Firefox, or commercial Opera, on every other platform, versus seriously overpriced (and technically far behind) IB, plus other apps at similar insanity levels...it becomes QUITE expensive to get a collection of even halfway reasonable apps. Add it all up and you've got problems for the platform.

I dunno what the solution is either. I bought IB and other Amiga software recently, but others won't, at some of the prices vs features, or lack thereof. I tend to think if free software doesn't make some good inroads in the reasonably near future on AOS/A1/OS4, it's going to become a shrinking platform where it seems the few commercial efforts are trying to bleed the remaining users dry of $...which as $72 for IB, I've got to say is the impression I get. Yes, I hope I'm wrong as well....

I expect some software niches to be better filled with the next OS4 update as I believe we're supposed to be able to use ixemul then, which will at least help me in a few ports I'm waiting to do...
