| So can anyone tell me if this will work with a VNC server that doesn't have a password set on it? At least I think that was the issue I ran into when I tried the previous beta at home, and I didn't see anything in the notes on the web page that mentioned it.
Can't check as I'm at work right now.
VNC isn't much use to me unless I can connect to my linux server. I have it set up to initiate VNC sessions through xinetd by just connecting to a particular port. It is set not to use a password for the VNC session, as it will bring up the graphical XDM/GDM/KDM greeter for the login to Linux. If that login fails, it drops the connection.
Anyway, I can't use TwinVNC with it because it doesn't like not using a password. I can do this on all my other machines as well as with VVA on my Amiga, just not with TwinVNC. _________________ This posting, in it's entirety, is the opinion and/or statement of the author and does not reflect the views and/or position of this site.

| We would need a really fast VNC server for Amiga. AmiVNC does its job, but unfortunately it's not fast: I can use a PC over the net from my A1, but I can barely use my A1 from a remote PC.
I can 'control' it, i.e. I can see if some window has popped in, or if there is an unexpected requester, or if a work has finished, but I cannot really use it.

Would you consider porting the "NX Terminal Server" which can do VNC plus other protocols, but is FAST... See below snippet, even 9600 baud modem. :)
http://www.nomachine.com
"CUT & PASTE" NoMachine's X Protocol Compression Technology
NoMachine has developed exclusive X protocol compression techniques and an integrated set of proxy agents that make it possible to run complete remote desktop sessions, even at full screen, using narrowband Internet connections, at speeds as low as those offered by a 9600 band modem.
.........
OpenSource, a Mission Statement
NoMachine has released as Open Source all the core libraries and low level software components developed to support its NX Distributed Computing Architecture. This includes the X agents, the client proxy and all the libraries implementing compressed transport of X protocol. NoMachine has chosen the GNU General Public Licence, the same licence that drives the development of the Linux operating system. NoMachine aims to support a wide community of developers, working together to create interactive server and client software to make the Network Computing revolution possible. ...... "CUT & PASTE"

| The new TwinVNC works here just fine without a password on the server. I'm using OSXvnc to serve the ibook to my Amithlon setup with TwinVNC as the client.
I don't really see how much faster it is than VVA. I tried all of the modes and most seemed only just as fast. Maybe I'm missing something. Still, I like it better because of the windowed mode.
Very nice.

| Yes, AmiVNC is a painfully slow server. I mainly use it to serve up my Amiga (which is hooked up to my stereo) to my ibook so I can control AMPlifier from afar. It's like a giant remote control.
However, I'm having a heck of a time getting AmiVNC to work from an icon. I end up having to open a shell and try to remember all the settings from before!

Check your PM here. I sent it to you that way.
By the way, my profile has my email address in it and has had it for a while. Last edited by DWolfman on 26-Apr-2005 at 12:38 PM.

Well, if it's working for you without a password, then I must be doing something wrong. But then why would the author have to make a special version to "fix" this issue?
Anyway, I've tried it with the password option not even entered, with it entered as a tooltype as PASS=, and entered with an empty string as PASS="". In every case I get a message about failed authentication. As I recall, that was the same thing I got on the previous beta.
I'd be curious though to know exactly how you got this to work. I get a feeling there is something set on the server side that I do not have set on my server side.
As for speed, there is a big difference between the 68K VNC programs and the OS4 native one. You would see a difference on your Amithlon setup if you could get an x86 Amithlon binary to run it as I do running the OS4 version. VVA is "sluggish" on my OS4 setup, but OS4 TwinVNC is just as snappy as RealVNC on my PC.
Besides, we needed a more up-to-date version of VNC anyway. VVA is getting rather old now. Last edited by DWolfman on 26-Apr-2005 at 12:42 PM.

| You're right. I have no password set on the server, so I don't use a password in TwinVNC. It works just fine.

| You can use empty password if your server uses the version 3.3 of the RFB protocol (old server). You need a bug fix with 3.7 and 3.8 protocols...

My server is probably using either the 3.7 or 3.8 protocol. It does have the Linux version of RealVNC 4.0 installed on it.
Yup, just checked by hooking up from the PC here. It is protocol version 3.8. Guess that means I need the bugfix, as RealVNC 4.0 is what I have loaded everywhere except the AmigaOne.
Seg, I sent my email address to you through a PM here, and it is in my profile here as well. I can give the special version a test run for you if you would still like to send it to me. _________________ This posting, in it's entirety, is the opinion and/or statement of the author and does not reflect the views and/or position of this site.
