Software News   Software News : DiskMaster 2.5.32 released
posted by wegster on 8-Jul-2005 23:29:23 (4937 reads)
It looks like DiskMaster 2 has seen a new release back in June, both for 68k/Classic as well as OS4/PPC.

You can download it here, and make sure to pay a visit to the Main Page for DiskMaster 2 as well.

EDIT- My lame unconfigured screenshot is here on AW , although I'd love to see others.

It's nice to see people updating their apps, especially when an OS4 native version is available as well!

I've asked the author if PayPal donations are available, will update if I get a response.

This is a kick-ass program. I use this the most on OS4.

Just wondering...

Why do you guys/galls think DM is so good ? Don't just say "It's OS4 native' I know that, but I mean functionality, speed and whatever....

I use Dopus 4 and I think it's a great piece of software, but that could just be because I'm used to it.

I used DM2.something long ago but I never liked it apart from the fact it could run without any library's etc. And therefore almost worked

So, tell me some good reasons to try out DM !

Thanks,

Martin,

ps, anyway it's a great job of the programmers to support Amiga, and OS4 in perticular

I used this program on my classic Amiga's too. It just works like it has to. It does what I want it to do. It does not let me down. And it is so simple.

I would also like to know of specific benefits to DM.

I always used to use DOpus 4, but now I mainly use AmiDisk on OS4 (though I do still use DOpus for it search and hunt features).

Well I don't like it that much.. Native or not.
I don't use software because they're native, I use them if they're good.

Why can't someone steal the DOpus 4 layout and without the bugs

Hi!

Hmm, yes, I am Rudolph Riedel, funny handles are not always the best choice.

I haven't been using my AW account for some time now, my time is pretty limited
since I started to go to school again (Techniker/Datenverarbeitung, roughly to be compared with a bachelor of computer science, three days per week after work for four years, now near the end of the third year).

First of all - sorry for not announcing the release of DiskMaster 2.5.32 here on AW.
I may check with AW again but the last two times I tried to announce a DM2 release it just did not show up in the headlines at all...

Regarding the prefs-editor, I just do not have the time to write one, especially since
I do not need it myself.
But since the Startup.DM is nothing but a text-file anyone could write a specialised
editor for it if he wants to and I would support the effort.
But at first, for which purpose do you need a prefs-editor anyways?

Then the comparision with other tools like DOpus and AmiDisk.
Well, what I always liked about DiskMaster2 was that it's layout is not fixed.
Yes, I normally use a setup with two dir-windows and a command-window between them but I also like to be able to open a bunch of additional windows when I need them and where I need them.
In this respect I really don't know why DOpus4 is so popular, it's so much limited.

The GUI of DiskMaster2 is one of it's week points by now as I see it.
But there are already changes on it's way.
Jody reimplemented the requester-code based on reaction.
And what I would like to add is to use ListBrowser.gadget for the dir-windows.
But currently I consider even the latest OS4 versions of this gadget to be too limited for DiskMaster2 and to be too buggy as well in otherwise seldom used features.
AmiDisk leads the way in some respect but it definately does not meet what I would like to see implemented in an improved DiskMaster2 GUI.

The only way out of this currently would be to write my own gadget but I do not only lack the experience to do so but more important the time.
But if someone likes to write a new gadget I gladly provide some specs.

Have a nice day - Rudolph

Hehe, yes, that DiskMaster2 does not use MUI is one thing that
I consider to be a feature!

I use it because it is the one I have always used. I have tried most of the others, but I like the way DM works and I always go back to it. I like that I can change the way it is configured by editing a text file. I like that I can have a few differrent configurations and run the one that I need at any given time.

Many years ago I noticed one major performance difference between DiskMaster and DOPus 4. When reading CD directories on an external SCSI CD-Rom, DiskMaster was -much- faster than DOpus.

I have no idea why, but on a drawer with a large number of files, like clip art or Framestores, DM was more than twice as fast.

Anyone that cannot understand why people prefer DO4 over DM2 never used DO4 extensively. It has some POWERFUL scripting tools, FULL Arexx support, powerful filetype filters and a TON of features that let users add even more powerful features.

Example, people have written scripts that let you browse inside of archives as if they were directories, access ftp sites as if they where local, and run programs like ImageFX and ADPRO remotely.

I won't bother comparing DM2 to DO5, since DO5 is so revolutionary it isn't fair to compare.

edit: typos fixed

What do you mean "so what?"

You asked "In this respect I really don't know why DOpus4 is so popular, it's so much limited."

So I told you why I prefer DO4.

Yes, you told us why you prefer DO4 but you did not really read my reply.

Point is that anything you wrote in the sentence I "quoted" about DO4 is also valid for DM2.

But enough of this, use whatever you like, every aplication has it's pros and cons.

I could however advertise more what features DiskMaster2 has.
And yes, DiskMaster2 may need the one or other addtional requester.

Instead of fancy it's small, fast, useable and stable.
And last but not least - supported -> work in progress...

Regards - Rudolph

One more thing.

My comment that DOpus4 is limited was in the context of it's layout.
I just don't like the one-window-two-lister-plus-buttons approach.

Then look at DO5, that has NO such window limitations.

"Point is that anything you wrote in the sentence I "quoted" about DO4 is also valid for DM2."

You never said that, you just quoted it and it was not clear why

When I used DiskMaster it was not as powerful as DO4. Either I don't know DM2 well enough or your don't know DO4 well enough.

Бля ребята удивительно, неужели никто до сих пор из тех кто хочет под омигу программить не понял что надо делать чтото нечто far/nc/vc/dn ? Ну тоесть 2 панели, по ним курсором и тд ? Нахуя эти велосипеды ?

2english:
mans, i wondering why noone from programmes (still yet) do not understand that need ONE GOOD FILE MANAGER kind of FAR style, or dn/vc/nc. Dopus is good, but agly. Can't operate completly from keyboard. All what need it is only 2 panels with cursor (operate from keyboard of course) and some basic comands like copy/rename/move. Where is problem? fear that far/dn is 'windows like' programs ?:)
