hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : DvPlayer v0.54 Released
   posted by COBRA on 19-Apr-2006 21:46:57 (6069 reads)
A new version of DvPlayer is now available on the DvPlayer Webpage. Registered users will receive their copy via E-Mail. If you don't please contact me.

Mirror #1
Mirror #2

Changes in this release:

- Added direct DVD support
- Added automatic detection of CD/DVD drive (no need to specify device name/unit anymore)
- Added support for the new 64bit DOS functions so that files >2GB are now handled correctly
- Implemented the I/O plugin system and moved the DVD/VideoCD support to an external plugin
- Screen Blanker is now not allowed to activate while playing
- Implemented AppWindow support so files can be dragged onto DvPlayer's window
- Now the previous filename is remembered in the file requester when opening files
- Window is now opened on the frontmost screen (if it's public) instead of the Workbench screen so that if it's started from a different screen it will open there.
- Improved 6-Channel to Stereo audio conversion routines to avoid distortions which appeared with a few DVDs
- Fixed NOTRIPLEBUFFER option (was broken when subtitle support was added)
- Fixed sound distortions with interleaved AVI files
- Now ensures that only complete frames are sent to the video decoder for AVI files. This should fix the problems with partially downloaded AVI files.
- Fixed a bug in the subtitle code which caused memguard hits
- Fixed a serious bug in GUI loading (thanks to memguard)
- Fixed a nasty bug in the exit code which could cause random crashes

Yeah! Finally Cobra!

I was even thinking about asking if you had dropped DVPlayer
Just joking.. Great work! Keep it up..

About the direct DVD support.. Is this being able to use DVD menus with
the mouse or am I missing something?

I just tried it. It doesn't include menus yet and won't play encrypted DVDs (as expected, he told us this wasn't going to be added). Still, at least you don't have to look for the right *.vob files to play. Implementing DVD menus is likely to require a significant amount of time.

It's nice to get an update that makes significant improvements. I haven't tried out the other features yet, but I can say that the auto DVD/CD drive detection works well. I have two DVD drives (one's a CDRW/DVD combo) and putting a DVD in either one of them and clicking on play DVD/VCD will automatically choose the right drive, and play. I was worried that the auto-detection might choose the first drive it found, forcing me to use that particular drive every time.

@Cobra

What about subtitles for DVD playback?

@Samwel

Direct DVD support means that DVDs are played directly via the device, instead of through the file system (e.g. selecting VOB files). This way you can play the whole movie in one piece, instead of seperated into VOB files. If I think about it it is not too much of an improvement but was a lot of work, e.g. I had to write code to handle the UDF (Universal Disk Format) file system of DVDs. And, well supporting DVD playback this way gives a lot more flexibility. For example try to eject the DVD from the drive while DvPlayer is playing from it!

As for DVD menus, it plays the menu stream but you cannot navigate. This is rather low priority because it's a lot of work and you can still watch all the video streams on the DVD without that, choose language, etc. Support for other video formats (e.g. wmv) has higher priority.

DVD subtitle support will come. There is a todo list in the pdf documentation.

Thank you, DvPlayer is my favorite player on all platforms.

Strange the link was working just an hour ago... Lucky I have updated the mirror page too, although that's a bit slow. Could one of the moderators please include a link to the mirror page in the news item?

Nice feature, at first I thought that this was broken on my system (A1 XE G4 Radeon 7500 and latest OS4 beta) after going to "Project/Open DVD/VCD" as nothing happened..... for a little while.

Just being inpatient I guess as it came up in the end.

Watched an old movie called "Party Party" in it's entire length, great stuff!

@sicky

It shouldn't take long, here it takes about 1 sec for the movie to start playing, although I have just a single drive as CD0, maybe you have several drives which the player needs to check before it finds the one with the DVD in it.
