Software News   Software News : Grim Fandango plays out on Amiga OS 4
   posted by Toaks on 21-May-2006 22:19:28 (3936 reads)

Today the dark and mysterious (Le) frak released one of his offsprings into this sawy river of x86 posts and endless trolling.

To play the dark skeleton from the lucas gang you will need the Datafiles (approx 1.2 GB) and it should be available in shops still (or ebay etc).

----Start of os4depot description----
What is Residual?
-----------------
Residual is a ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/) sub-project to play LucasArts' LUA-based 3D adventures, such as Grim Fandango. Residual is an OpenGL program, and requires a 3D card with working OpenGL support for optimum playability.

A software renderer is also included for machines without hardware OpenGL.

The main ScummVM program can run LucasArts 2D SCUMM adventures (among others). Residual is named such as it aims to do the same for the residual (remaining) games. It is also a word pun, as the engine used in these LUA-based adventure is called GrimE (as opposed to SCUMM). Grime is a type of residue.

What games does it support?
---------------------------
Residual is a fairly new project and slow developing project, and is still very much considered alpha. Currently it contains initial support for Grim Fandango.

It is possible, but far from promised, that we can support the other LucasArts LUA-based title 'Escape from Monkey Island' in the distant future.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

AmigaOS4: Hardware rendering & Fullscreen busted...for now.

first thing to do is edit the residualrc file and adjust the datapath, after that it's just a matter of doubleclicking the supplied residual icon.

good luck.

Wicked cool! What I've heard about the game is really great. Let's home we get some h/w rendering in the future too.

Thanks, and keep it up!

@Toaks

Can't you make the screenshot a bit larger? I can hardly see it.

How well does it run and can the game be played all the way through?

I ask this because the scummvm team dont seem to think Residual is suitable for mass consumption yet.

well, its a big title guys!.

and its time for everyone to see the news

@turumbar:

it plays pretty darn good (faster than other commercial adventures on AmigaOS) though its not silky smooth in movements but fully enjoyable and well HW render is supported but not working in this OS4 version just yet but i know it will eventually.

And the reason why ScummVM team don't have residual in scummVM yet is because its buggy and not completed (what ever that means) though i played quite a few screens and hammered it without any problems...though there is NO save options atm and thats crucial for the MASS as you called it so thats it i guess.

When I saw that picture, I thought "Amiga, the jig is up!"

This is fantastic.

Shows that contrary to popular belief, "Amiga Lives", through an ironic vehicle...

Hey! You've flinched my Avatar for a screen shot... or maybe its the otherway around.

Seriously though, this is great news! GF is one of my favourites and I've been waiting for Residual to be usable... I just didn't realize that it was this far along!

Cheers!

When Residual is a bit more improved, hopefully, Amigakit will then produce one of their great AmigaOS4 version...
MI3 and DOTT/SamMax are both excellently put together, so finger's crossed...

Downloaded and installed. Many thanks. I was wondering what to do with all those old Lucas Arts games that are not supported by ScummVM! I hope you go on to to finish Grim Fandango and the other excellent games. Keep up the good work!

PS where do I send my donation!
