Software News   Software News : Lua 5.1 for OS4 with dynamic library support
posted by ssolie on 27-May-2006 23:47:06 (4063 reads)
You'll find an updated Lua 5.1 on OS4Depot which includes dynamic library support.

This means it is now possible to extend Lua with a ReAction tookit for example without modifying Lua itself. It is also possible to add a Lua interface to any existing AmigaOS library like ARexx was added to some libraries in days gone by. This is accomplished by adding an Exec Interface named "lua" to whichever library you want to be Lua compatible and adding code to convert to and from the world of Lua. A skeleton library is provided as an example.

Great! Lua is very good at embedded scripting, with the help of an external library applications could extend its possibilities even more. Very well done!

to put it more into context of what people may have used here, quite a bit of World of Warcraft uses Lua, especially the various user made UI's.

Lua is much used by Lucas Arts and blizzard uses it too but most of all there is allready lua stuff on os4 which will benefit a lot from this update though a recompile is needed but that will happen i guess

ssolie , keep up the great work.

PSP homebrew community has put Lua into good use:

If porting Luaplayer is possible, it will give some more games and more importantly, makes easier to create quickly new games. But of course, there is already Hollywood...

Can you point us to a comparison site about LUA?

I am interested in an article which will make it plain to a programmer what are the advantages/disadvantages of LUA compared to a simple C vocabulary & verb scheme or BASIC or Python or Rebol or Ruby or Tcl or what the heck... OS4/ARexx. Why should I be inclined to invest time in yet another Open Source programming environment?

I have looked into the above already and lean mostly on Python and Tcl.

Lua can be used as a scripting or configuration language. No need to recompile your app, just edit the scripts. Lua is smaller than Python. Being ANSI-C, Lua is available everywhere, well, after recompiling it :)
