Software News   Software News : Another World returns to the Amiga platform
   posted by elwood on 3-Jun-2006 23:02:52 (6262 reads)
A few weeks ago it was reported that Eric Chahi the author behind Another World had released a collector's edition of this classic action adventure game. In a surprise move Cloanto revealed that Another World has returned to the Amiga platform.

On the amiga.org forums, the Cloanto team said, "It is included on Amiga Forever 2006 Plus Edition and Premium Edition, which are due out next week, and contain more than 200 MB of new games and demoscene productions. This Amiga version of Another World is a special build by Eric Chahi just for Amiga Forever".

The release of this game on the pc has already generated interest among retro gamers and even some journalists. On Binary Moon, Erik Sagen revealed, "as soon as I heard this I waited in anticipation for it's release. The minute (okay, a few hours) after it was released I quickly bought it and I'm stuck". Another gamer known as Niclas said, "an Amiga classic worthy of another shot - think ICO, minimalist, well-animated goodness with an atmosphere so alien it will make your toes curl."

Forget OS4, I'm buying the better product: Amiga Forever!

Hey you OS4 guys, how are you going to beat this?

I think so.
It would be a miracle if Eric Chahi had an A1 and he would spend time coding for OS4 :-/

The website says it's PC only...

And the demo is for windows XP. What a shame!

Hmmm. PC Only. Had it been a true Special Edition for the 68k (or - the almost mythical - AOne) I would have certainly have purchased Amiga Forever.

It would have been very surprising but oh so cool.

Eric Chahi is still a hero. Didn't his brother do the brilliant soundtrack?

The press release says "This Amiga version of Another World is a special build by Eric Chahi just for Amiga Forever", sounds more like a tweaked 68k Amiga version.

@Tuxedo

You do that - I'll mail Cloanto seeing as there is nothing on their pages about it.

@Tuxedo

I mailed him some times ago (over one month ?), and he replied that he wasn't planning to work again on Amiga...

@All

I've found out some details from Cloanto:

'From what I know it is a fresh build of the original, with no major changes other than what would be required for the specific distribution in Amiga Forever (e.g. the original publication notes and protection schemes would have been inappropriate). if you right-click on the Another World entry in the Amiga Forever launcher it has additional information, including the author's web site, where you can ask.'

Very helpful of them but it looks like further details will have to come from Eric. Tuxedo - over to you.

@-Sam-

I just found that Email received from Eric (18/04/2006) just saying that a new Amiga Port is not planned...

So to me it looks like Cloanto (or Eric himself ?) just recompiled the old 68k sources, but not the newer version...

His AnotherWorld web site was a very interesting read, especially what he said about the history & development process:
http://www.anotherworld.fr/anotherworld_uk/index.htm

Apparently the Amiga version was the first, and so was only playtested by him, hence it was very hard - versions for other platforms were apparently less hard, and some had an extra level so it wasn't so short.

It was also nice to play (the first level only of) AnotherWorld on Windows, with much improved resolution & textures. As the full game sells for something like just 7 euros, it could make a tempting purchase.
