hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : News on the Sigmatel Sound Chips for A1s
   posted by cgutjahr on 5-Jun-2006 15:05:32 (5129 reads)
Costel Mincea, who initiated a centralised buying for the onboard sound chips initially used in the AmigaOne but erroneously left off in later production runs, has 70 Sigmatel STAC9752T sound chips available now.

Mincea distributed his expenses (the price for the chips, shipping to him, duty fees) on the number of chips available, which results in a price per unit of slightly more than four Euro. Therefore, a single chip can be ordered from him for four Euro plus shipping (depends on target location, 1,- Euro for European customers).

Users can now order chips by emailing sigmatel@stackswap.net, specifying the desired quantity and the delivery address. The reply will confirm the order and specify payment details. Orders will be processed "first come, first serve", the available stock is limited to 70 units

My audio chip is missing, but unfortunately I don't have the skills to fit it myself!

Can somebody please modify the article, and change "errorneously" to "intentionally". The sound chips were left off later runs purely because people (who probably didn't even buy the damn things) were complaining about paying for on-board sound that didn't work.

Chris

The chips were left off because Eyetech assumed they did not work. But they do work, so they were left off erroneously.

@cgutjahr

I don't know why I'm bothering arguing the point, but surely they could only be left off errorneously if Eyetech intended them to be present?

AFAIK this was a conscious business/design decision, and therefore not a production run error as the article suggests.

Chris

What about the filter caps and ballast resistors? Are they present on the board?
If not you will need to add them too.

wizz.

If the price wasn't any lower without the chip, then I'd think that more people would complain about paying for a missing chip than for one that wasn't missing.

an easy way to shut them up, would be to say that they got a better CPU instead, so they should have payed more

I have one also. Guess we were the very "early bird" purchasers, eh?

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Yeah but if the chip is only four euro, how much of a saving really is that?

@Cyborg

I also thought there would be more interest in these chips!

So come on guys and get an AC'97 codec for your A1.

BTW: Wasn't there a dealer interested in these chips, too?

I hope you get to sell them all.. Odd how much interest there was when you asked if people wanted such chips, but now there is hardly even any reply??

This guy invested great deal of money in bring you these chips, so i think you better buy it when you showed interest. Not good if he ends up with losses just because some people changed their mind suddently.

Perhaps people are now wondering how they will fit them?!? Personally I would have taken a list of people who were interested BEFORE ordering the chips...
