Software News   Software News : lpd Print Daemon Updated for OS4
   posted by ssolie on 16-Jul-2006 19:47:30 (2943 reads)
I recently needed a way to print from my Mac Mini to my HP PostScript laser printer connected to my A1's parallel port. After a quick search I found an lpd implementation on Aminet. The sources were included so I ported it to OS4 and updated it along the way including fixing many of the bugs. It is now compatible with MacOS X's implementation. I didn't try it with anything else yet.

The lpd daemon simply takes print requests and pipes the data directly to PAR: only. If you happen to need lpd to do anything else please email me.

You can find it on OS4Depot.

Thanks, Steve, for releasing this very useful utility.

Isn't this just about the same that Olaf Barthel did some months ago?

Or what's the difference?

Hi,

WOW .. i use this on my A4000 Main system as print server for my LAN of 3 Amigas..
It works nice and bugfree [68k version ]
And is VERY small and CPU nice .. like Amiga simple [have i said i dislike Samba ...? ]

Hope for the ability to redirekt the output to a directory [by me the eHandler device
from the PrintManager pakage .. so ALL print jobs (local or over Network) going
first in my printmanager ]

Maybe hard coding to PAR: or PSERVER: ?
[to avoid dangerous things like printing to s:startup-sequence, and the eHandler
device is easy renamed to PSERVER: ]

This is imho a good idea

@ssolie

Just wondered if there is a way to do it the other way round! I have a Canon i560 (USB) connected to my G5 iMac and wondered if there is any way to use it with my AmigaOne whilst it's still connected?

I have Turboprint 7.60 installed and working on the AmigaOne.

My AmigaOne and G5 iMac are both connected to a router..... any ideas?

Hi,

@sicky

the 68k ldp port work fine with the NetPar package from Aminet [68k too] ...
So .. if your Mac accept the same protocol as ldp .. maybe ..

Is Windows XP able to print to LPD printers? If so, is there anything special you need to do to get it working?

I'd like to be able to print from my laptop without having to plug the printer in and out all the time.

Nicely done, the more native AmigaOS4 programs the better.

To print from your A1 to an LPD-enabled box try lpr_dev. On the Mac side you need to figure out how to enable the lpd server--Google should be able to help you there.

From the Microsoft support site it looks like you can and setup is easy. I'll try this when I get home.

Hi,

@ssolie:

*hint*hint* .. maybe port the NetPar pakage to OS4 too
I prefer netpar over ldr-dev .. with netpar i have a local spool dir ,if the
network or/and printer unavailable and inform the user over this problem and
send the print job later if the connection work again automatical..
[or after an reboot]
And i can define several Unit configs with different host or/and printers.

And crate a user friendly GUI too

@Hans

Thanks for the link. Following those instructions worked for me (printing from an XP box through my A1 printer).

@PEB

Good to hear that it works. I just hope that my printer's bidirectional printing feature doesn't get in the way when I try to set it up.

I've been wanting to be able to print from my laptop via my A1 for a while now and I'd given up as printing in the latest Samba version is broken. As the rest of my Samba setup is working fine, I didn't want to downgrade.
