Software News   Software News : Amiga OpenOffice.org Status
   posted by Mark on 29-Aug-2006 15:57:21 (3876 reads)
The Development of the Amiga OS4 port of OpenOffice.org requires some assistance. We have currently completed some dependancies including libusb, aspell, neon and some work has been done on porting csh.

We need developers to produce a complete dependancy database plus
further the csh port.
All this needs doing prior to starting the actual OpenOffice.org code.

Well I hope some Coders step forward to offer their services as this is a "Must Have" app for Amiga

@The_Editor

Yeah after a decent web browser....

Will OpenOffice run through the XWindows port then? Or is this a native OS4 port?

Im guessing so with all the dependencies being ported...

Also can these librarys be used for stuff like porting Firefox/Mozilla to the amiga?

Sure these dependencies are useful for port a lot of more apps

Same old problem I suppose; too many projects and not enough coders. It's a direct result of the hardware "license" and the anti-PC zealotry in the Amiga establishment. Yes it's another story, but it still affects us all.

Instead of panicking whenever you see a reference to a cheap, available, powerful, open hardware platform, try this:

1. Breathe deeply and relax
2. And again
3. Now think of a deep pile of brown wet smelly dung
4. Now remember how unpleasant it is that the Amiga has been at the bottom of this stinking wodge for 10 years.
5. Now engage your reasoning part of your brain: this thought should have priority: expensive, under-performing, lockin/"licensed"-to-the-hilt, propretary hardware has helped us remain in this dung pile

Seriously though, there is an enormous elephant in the room, and everytime someone mentions it they are moaned at/whinged at/shouted down.

@smithy:

Your comments are deliberately off topic and gratuitously aggressive. Your post is typical of about half a dozen people here, who take every opportunity to belittle others' work and offer nothing themselves.

We know how you feel and it does not concern us any more than our feelings concern you. If you don't like the way we have chosen to do things, then go away and stop telling us about it.

In smithy's defence ... HE's one of the few that actually IS doing something about it.

If we would have x86 instead of a PPC heart in our HW, the porting wouldn't be easier at all.
It's not about CPU, it's about API...

... and licence, and Gateway allowing us to produce an OS on x86.

But maybe Smithy is a wizard and can use the Force to get all this for our community.

@all

Everyone, calm down. Don't make me delete this news item and then ask for a re-submission with heavy penalties for ANY flaming in any ensuing posts. Yes, there are pros and cons to what everything has been stated, however, it seems as though we cannot remain a little tempered with the wording of our responses. Address the issue at heart. The rest of the cr4p can be taken to another thread.

All flaming stops here.

We are aiming for an OS4 native app, although if/when we get that far we may go througha beta version that works through X11.

hence the need for someone to go through the vast amounts of source and build us a dependancy database.

Might be a silly quetion but can you not use abc-shell (pdksh) instead of csh?

Or would that require to much script rewriting.

Don't kill me, but what's the status? Now that we have SAM + os 4.1 - would anybody start up this project again?

Since I'm a "new" user here - I don't know any history about this project - have searched the web, but not found anything new regarding it's status (probably because the project is dead)
