Software News   Software News : Sputnik bounty complete.
   posted by Troels on 4-Apr-2007 21:50:28 (7333 reads)
- Mission accomplished -
The OS4 users have now donated 3,124.72 EUR and the Sputnik for OS4 bounty is complete. Further donations are off course welcome and will be transfered to Marcin when the OS4 version of Sputnik is released.

Big thanks to everyone who made a donation and especially to those who spend time publishing updates on websites in languages I don't speak myself.

Feel free to email me at tersking()gmail.com with suggestions of other bounty projects.

Moderator please correct the first link to Sputnik for OS4 bounty, thanks!

[Done! / Moxee]

I had a mail from Marcin today and it is still a little early for him to think about the OS4 version but we will get him some hardware during the summer and let him start the work on the port as soon as the MorphOS version has evolved a bit.

Further donations are welcome and so are ideas for other bounty projects.

@Troels

So how are we regarding the dependencies (MUI4 and the font system used by Sputnik)?
Any word from the people on the OS4 team that's working on the MUI4 port?

I can't tell you much about the dependencies atm. Marcin will use the old MUI for the OS4 version unless MUI4 becomes available before he starts working on the port. Fonts will probably be handled by OS4's internal font rendering.

This is just my take on it, you better ask Marcin the technical questions, I really shouldn't even try to answer.. :)

I haven't heard how progress is on the OS4 version of MUI4 lately. Will have to check up on that sometime soon.

Great news indeed! I am proud of my fellow donators. We did it! We did it!

Now the wait begins.

Excellent news. Well done on helping to set up the bounty and raise the funds. This is the way to get quality software written or ported to OS4.0.

@Troels

So what will happen now? When the first version is released he get the money but... what if what he releases isn't any good? Like a bad crappy version of Sputnik. Shouldn't the AOS 4 users get to choose if the money should be give to him or not?

I know that Sputnik isn't all there yet but... it should at least be like the MOS version or very similar...

Yeah right! It's going to be hard enough chopping out MUI v4 functionality for OS4's MUI 3.9, let alone completely redoing the whole thing.

Do you program? It's not a simple case of "gcc main.c -usereaction"

Then he won't be paid.

I'd imagine it would be a MUI version, because for sanity reasons it should try to remain as close to the MorphOS codebase as possible, and there isn't ReAction for MorphOS, is there?

At the same time, Sputnik uses MUI 4 alpha, and there's no version of that for AmigaOS 4 yet. I don't know if a new alpha has been released yet, but the MorphOS version is missing some functions like preset loading and some "don't click me!" buttons still exist in the UI. I also don't know what the porting process to OS4 is like.

Classact runs on MorphOS (and also reaction if you really want), but anyway it would be a real pain to adapt sputnik to classact/reaction, assuming reaction is up to the task. It's not realistic IMO.

About MUI4 alpha not having load/save as, it's just a minor detail, trivial to fix.

Why on earth one would want to downgrade an MUI app to a Classact one? What special features does it have to make it worthwhile? MUI has one major one reason going for it, it is standard, and as such it eases the port for all the Amiga like platforms, going for a reaction means a split, which isn't very wise...

@pixie

Aye, must agree. I really don't get why people hate MUI so much these days... fair enough it was slow-ish on a 030, but the latest version on fast hardware is seriously fast and a joy to use!

Programming a MUI application is such a pleasure, it's hard to describe. Easy, Easy, Easy and it looks bloody good too.

Unfortunately for ReAction/ClassAct, the exact opposite can be said! A shame, but true... MUI was, or should have been, the natural step UP for AmigaOS.

The problem most of us OS4 users have with MUI is that firstly, OS4 comes with the crippleware version of it, and secondly there is no MUI 4 for OS4. If OS4 came with the same level of MUI support that MOS has, I definitely wouldn't have a problem with it.

I used to dislike MUI back in the 68K days, but that was because my stock A1200 crawled with it. My 933MHz G4 doesn't have those kind of problems...
